Colombo Chief Magstrate Rashmika Singappuli today sentenced two individuals who had damaged, defiled and insulted Buddhism by selling key tags with the image of Lord Buddha.

The accused Tuan Rajabdeen of Colombo 14 and Aboobucker Kaleel of Ferguson Road were produced before the court by the Pettah Police complaining that the accused had sold the key tags with Lord Buddha's image at First Cross Street, Colombo.

The Police complained that the accused had committed an offence punishable under section 290 of the Penal Code for damaging, defiling and insulting Buddhism and had intentionally wounded the religious feelings of Buddhists.

The accused pleaded guilty and the magistrate sentenced them for one year rigorous imprisonment suspended for two years.

Wonder what will happen if you have buddha images on budhist monk's undies??

    sltk2004 Wednesday, 18 August 2010 12:07 PM

Don't worry they are not sent to prison : "imprisonment suspended for two years."

    Bakamoona Wednesday, 18 August 2010 11:55 AM

You seem like a temple wall worshipper !

    Bakamoona Wednesday, 18 August 2010 11:46 AM

If people can print Buddha's picture on wesak cards and then throw in the garbage, why not that image in a key chain ?

    Holman Wednesday, 18 August 2010 11:38 AM

Religion is not a photograph or an image, religion is you yourself, nothing else.

    arshad Wednesday, 18 August 2010 09:12 AM

If a Budhist sells their key tags what will happen. Because its a Muslim he has insulted .Buddha even pardoned Angulimala a killer who came for his life . Therefore if he was alive he will not take to task persons selling key tags with his image.

    Dear Pottuvil resident,
So what?! If you don't like it - don't buy it! Some of us are meat eaters, others are not. The vegetarians don't force the meat eaters to go veg and the meat eaters don't force the vegetarians to eat more. Both vegetables and meat are available even in the same supermarket as well! So it's the same thing. If you don't like it - don't buy it!But, according it Buddhism, it is not up to us or to any other authority to FORCE someone to do something or to make a choice. The mere act is against Buddhism! These are the things that should be nipped in the "BUD" as you say! Radical moves that will destroy the essence of Buddhism!

    Amila Tuesday, 17 August 2010 09:04 PM

Yes, Lord Buddha would not have approved of this. But, the flexibility, in Buddhism, should not be abused!

    CK Tuesday, 17 August 2010 05:43 PM

dude, did Lord Buddah give you rights to decide what's right and what's wrong? poor fellow!

    CK Tuesday, 17 August 2010 05:41 PM

dude, you're the fundamentalist. Now tell me......... what will BUDDAH do if he was alive?

    Powerless Tuesday, 17 August 2010 05:19 PM

Welcome to the age of fundamentalism and fanaticism.
In my honest opinion, there should not be any law related to religion(s) in any land. Let there be freedom from religion.

Pottuvil resident Tuesday, 17 August 2010 05:17 PM

If you ignore these as petty, before long there will be underwear, slippers, etc with Buddha image. It is prudent to
nip the priblem in the bud.

Mother Lanka Tuesday, 17 August 2010 01:29 PM

Will the law in Sri Lanka prevail same for such damaging, defiling and insulting of other religions in Sri Lanka as well ? 1 year rigorous imprisonment.

The Liberal Tuesday, 17 August 2010 05:00 PM

So we have Buddhist Sharia here...a country without a secular legal system is like a man without a mind..useless

    Susantha Tuesday, 17 August 2010 02:25 PM

Demon, you are wrong. It's a good way to escape from all wrong doings and unfair rulings, which effected our nation so badly.

    chin Tuesday, 17 August 2010 02:24 PM

    Yes. Wrong.
You cannot have Buddha images wherever you want.

Key tag is a supportive to keys. It is not a spiritual or worship item.

Buddha in your wallet ? It's funny.

    mw Tuesday, 17 August 2010 02:22 PM

:( sad day - would the Buddha have approved of this kind of treatment?
If you call Buddhism a religion - then it should be considered a verb, and not a mere noun...
    This is sad.

    subba Tuesday, 17 August 2010 02:19 PM

    Geronimo,

I don't link tempura or mora. Tempered mora I like.

    Deepal Tuesday, 17 August 2010 02:06 PM

If I can hang an image of Lord Buddha in my car and also carry a picture of the Buddha in my wallet, I would like to have a key tag with an image of the Buddha for my car keys.

If it is my belief that having Buddha images where ever I want will give me a spiritual feeling, is it wrong.?

    sw Tuesday, 17 August 2010 01:55 PM

Man you must have your brains examined, or you are some sort of fundamentalist.

    demon Tuesday, 17 August 2010 01:53 PM

two accused were muslims/malay... i guess....

so people, now you can create hundreds of stories...

    Geronimo Tuesday, 17 August 2010 01:38 PM

    Oh Tempora, oh Mores!!!

    meelan Tuesday, 17 August 2010 01:35 PM

Very good. THough these petty sellers in Pettah don't understand the gravity of their work initially, it will be an eye opener for those who MAKE or IMPORT these stuffs.

I also have seen many has these types key tags attached to their car/office keys. Religous leaders to advice the people to avoid these type of acts.

    legaltalk Tuesday, 17 August 2010 01:34 PM

how on earth is selling a key tag with the image of the Buddha damaging, defiling and insulting Buddhism!?! How about people who have pictures with bright lights shining around it dangling in their cars?! Who is to decide?! And rigorous imprisonment for that?! What nonsense! Rapists get lower sentences in this forsaken country! Someone needs to appeal this nonsense! Buddhism is about liberalism and freedom, not about key tags and posters! Welcome to the TALEBAN LAND!
