Former Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva who made a public confession that a certain mistake he made while holding his post caused turmoil in the country today, tendered an apology to the nation yesterday.

“Mr. Silva who was speaking at a public seminar organized by the JVP in Colombo last evening said he did not do anything to prevent the present government from going for a snap presidential election when he delivered a judgment with regard to a candidate who was running for national election 2005.

“I met a JVP member at the Narahenpita pola recently and he asked me as to why I did not give the right judgment in 2005 and I could not answer him. But today I tender an apology for it. I am very sorry,” he said.

He also said that the government could not hold a snap presidential election according to the third amendment to the Constitution. He said whoever serving the second term as an executive president under section 31 3(d) of the constitution, he has to complete the full six year term.

Further Mr. Silva said the incumbent president could not contest for a third time unless the clause in the Constitution which makes the incumbent president disqualified as a candidate in a presidential election is removed.(Yohan Perera)

you should be punished many times for all the wrong judgments you gave. please confess for the others as well

Dr Arun Vincent Friday, 24 October 2014 03:32 PM

On one hand he has the courtesy to apologize and accept his mistakes.. On the other hand he admits that he was not a good judge and he would continue to make mistakes in life and keep on apologizing in life. I hope Mohan Peiris will do the same one day.

This why we want to reconsider seriously re-introducing PRIVY COUNCIL TYPE of Courts to re-examine the verdicts of certain judges.

What a joker. No doubt you are making another mistake here by joining with JVP and interpreting the constitution according to an agenda. At least back the UNP. Please not JVP because they have done soany mistakes for which they should be sorry and sorry.

Can any body suggest whether he should be sent to Angoda or Mullariyawa

    Gerard Sunday, 19 October 2014 05:53 PM

"Sorry" is the dirtiest word in the English vocabulary. It is very easy to say sorry and those who say so think that they will be forgiven for their wrong doings. An intellectual person such as you should have thought more intelligently before delivering the judgment which is harmful for the entire nation. Try and reverse your wonderful judgment Sir which allows those who exercise it to disregard the peoples mandate for personal gains.

Dear Sir do you think the citizens are utter fools in believing you. We all understand the damaged done by you to our motherland not your, by misinterpreting the law in several occasions. If any party tries to take political advantage by making him on the stage I just have on appeal, Please dont do it, he has done worst damage to SL not only once but several occasions.

What hope is there for Sri Lanka and the common man, if a Chief Justice can be compelled (or bought), to give a favourable decision aiding a ruling clique of corrupt politicians.? He has blighted the heart of your nation by this one act.

zouk fernando Saturday, 18 October 2014 08:01 PM

Dear sir, now I understand why you are suitable to become a politician in Sri Lanka. All the best. You will be the best politician ever! (LOL)

    dinesh Sunday, 19 October 2014 07:24 AM

Mistakes done purposely with ulterior motives cannot be ignored. You should be punished for that.

    truth Sunday, 19 October 2014 01:30 AM

How many other judgements you made just to please your boss and to keep your job or were you afraid of the "white van". An apology is not enough you will have to come out with all the truth atleast to educate the Sinhala Modayas. You have a duty towards the country and its suffering people!!!

    we are sorry! Api pow..?

    Nalin Saturday, 18 October 2014 09:41 PM

His confession is sufficient to disenroll him from the legal profession and charge him for contempt of the Supreme Court. Sitting as the Chief justice he has done more serious offence. Must be arrested and remanded.

    rizi Saturday, 18 October 2014 09:39 PM

    Its too late Sir

    Azee Saturday, 18 October 2014 09:28 PM

What is the case on which he gave the wrong judgment in 2005?What disgraceful behavior of one to be called Chief Justice?

    Dan Saturday, 18 October 2014 08:48 PM

Next time he will apologise for misleading the public by deliberately misinterpreting the constitution with a motive of discrediting the President. This is the person who wants people to believe what he says.....
