Election Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya yesterday said it were the political parties which can untie the knot of Provincial Council (PC) election through parliament. He said parliament could either pass a Bill to hold the election under the old electoral system or approve the new one.
Mr. Deshapriya said this after a group of Opposition MPs including MPs Dinesh Gunawardane, Vasudeva Nanayakkara and Udaya Gammanpila met him to express their disappointment over PC poll delay.
“The MPs said they were hoping to go to the courts over the delay, which is good. If they do that, we will follow the court's decision. We believe what is best would be holding the election under the old preferential system. We hope somebody will go to the courts to get the matter resolved,” he said.
Meanwhile, MP Gunawardane said they requested EC Chairman to hold the elections without further delay. (Lahiru Pothmulla)
