Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) said today it was unreservedly opposed to the proposed move to bring a new Constitution as it would create more problems rather than solving the existing ones.

SLPP Chairman Prof. G.L. Peiris told the Daily Mirror that he called on the Mahanayake Theras of Asgiriya and Malwatte Chapters during the weekend and briefed his party’s position.

He said the SLPP would oppose the new Constitution both in and outside parliament.

He said the MPs had no idea about the contents of the Constitution, and even the UNP backbenchers were asking about the meaning of the word ‘Orumiththa Nadu’ used to refer to it in Tamil. “It was thrust upon the MPs without any preparation,” he said.

He said it was the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) that wanted a new Constitution. He charged that the government had been beholden to the agenda of the TNA.

“The TNA controls the government. Without the TNA’s support, the government cannot pass even the budget,” he said.

How come when there are no SLPP members in the Parliament, to object inside Parliament when there are no members of SLPP in Parliament

It is not about the proposed constitution or good democratic governance. They do not care about any constitution as was seen during the 51 day coup, they rather care more about political power and their hatred towards Tamils gives them an easy way to achieve their objectives.

Mr G L Peris signed agreements with the then Indian Foreign Minister, S M Krishna, to go beyond 13th amendment plus to resolve the on going war with LTTE. President Rajapakse requested India's help to end the war and promised to Indian PM that he would resolve the political crisis involving Tamils in the island nation by bring a new constitution that goes beyond 13 amendment. India did help to end the civil war which the whole world knows. So Why these politicians turn their back now to their promises?

    Problem-Maker Monday, 14 January 2019 07:37 PM

If the country wants to prosper, petty minded, power greedy people like these should be thrown out by the people somehow... That's why SLPP stands for Sri Lanka's Problematic Party... Correctly said

Without TNA's support you couldn't even form a government

    Thusitha Monday, 14 January 2019 08:18 PM

People should think about what would happens with the proposed constitution rather than useless arguments. If country divided it will suffer all.Situation will be worst rather than now.If central power over PCs given to 225 the situation will be worst,94 out of 225 are failed O/L.There are charges on some.Only benefit the rulers of PCs with big vehicles and Salaries and other benefits. To solve the problems no need of changes of the constitution and what need is to take the responsibility by 225 only.

Here we go again. So many discussions about where the country would be today if only we had implemented the Banda - Chelva Pact or the Dudley - Chelva Pact. The country bled for three decades and lost its youth to an unnecessary war due to short sighted political opportunism. If we do not learn any lesson from the history it will keep repeating until we learn from it.

    Samson Monday, 14 January 2019 09:05 PM

How do you oppose or support in parliament when you don't have even one member. SLPP is like us the general public and sure we oppose an unwanted constitution, just dissolve the presidency.

    Tinkiriya Monday, 14 January 2019 09:20 PM

You could not even abide by our existing constitution. Will a new constitution or the current one be sacred with JOKERS like you that break every clause to quench you greed for power?

    nsathees Monday, 14 January 2019 09:24 PM

if Sri Lankan's are concerned about the future, they should defeat this SLPP clowns all to gather in the up coming election.

Professor is not a title to have been given to Mr Pieris.Consistency is not in his vocabulary. He not only jumped from UNP to SLFP and now to SLPP. His ideas also demonstrate the same.
