Sustainable development and Wildlife Minister Sarath Fonseka said yesterday steps were being taken to grow grasslands on 15 acres of land to feed wild elephants.
He told parliament that forest lands suitable for this purpose were being identified at the moment.
"We are engaged in the process of identifying the areas suitable to grow grass. The project is funded by the United Nations Organisations," the minister said.
In a response to a question asked by UNP MP Rohini Kumari Wijeratne, the minister said these grasslands would help feed about 1,500 wild elephants which strayed into villages looking for food.
He said the move would be an effective solution to the human-elephant conflict. (Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)

Please collect vegetable waste collected at Economic centers like Dambulla and send them to special feeding areas inside the jungle. This will further enhance by , buying vegetable from farmers at flat rate, whereas they do not have to dump their crop for garbage, but can sell at a reasonable price. This will help both elephants

15 acres are never enough to feed 1500 elephants. And it wont take long time before a VIP will send his bungalos there to graze...... via DM Android App

The idea is good but 15 acres is a very small area. Can you confine elephants to 15 acres in the wild?

Agriculture minister is trying to control wildlife population to control crop damage done by them. At the same time the Wildlife minister is planning to reduce the area of the motherland of wildlife .There is no one to look after the welfare of wildlife .
