Megapolis and Western Development Minister Champika Ranawaka said today that President Maithripala Sirisena's attention would likely to be focused on a presidential pardon for Ven. Galagoda Attte Gnanasara Thera who was sentenced to six years.

He said this in response to a question asked by a journalist after laying the foundation stone for the Gongawela Bus Terminal Development Project in Matale.

“However, I cannot confirm about a presidential pardon for Gnanasara Thera,” he said.(M.W.Somaratne)

This is why we need to get rid of the executive presidency and this type of ministers. If this happens it will be slap in the face for the judiciary,

    K Perera Thursday, 09 August 2018 08:54 PM

    Why is MS so naïve?

    Tamil Thursday, 09 August 2018 09:42 PM

President would definitely pardon the guy because if he wants to contest the election in 2020 he needs the support of the hardcore Buddhist vote. The same old story since the independence. This is why the Sri Lankan Prime Ministers or the Presidents were never able to stick to agreements signed with past traditional Tamil leaders. That resulted in the Tamil problem not being solved.

My 3 (Weak, fear, lie) palanaya!!!!!!

    Renu Thursday, 09 August 2018 09:46 PM

He was convicted and he is not above the law. If the President has pledged not to interfere with the judiciary, he has to stand by it. Some of these monks in Yellow robes think they could get away after committing a crime. Please Mr. President let the law take its own course

And we expect national reconciliation? Joke.

Sri Wickrema Friday, 10 August 2018 02:46 PM

Under the 19th amendment to the constitution can the President alone give a pardon for a convicted criminal? Can someone explain?

    Shakeel Friday, 10 August 2018 03:52 PM

Looks like we know who is one of the staunch supporters of this robed thug. If he gets a pardon throw this government out of power.

    Buddhist Saturday, 11 August 2018 07:26 PM

Its very unfortunate that in Sri Lanka, if you are rich, powerful or a Buddhist Priest you are treated differently compared to an ordinary citizen. Even when the courts, not one but two confirm the sentence of this priest, the President considering pardon proves not only to Sri Lankans but to the entire word the way court decisions are treated by the head of the country. Is this the Yahapalanaya we voted for? Is this the type of President we elected?

Wise Donkey Sunday, 12 August 2018 08:05 AM

This is the question in everyone's mind. Shame.
