The heads of diplomatic missions of the European Union (EU) countries would convey their displeasure to President Maithripala Sirisena on the move to execute death sentence, the Daily Mirror learned.

According to diplomatic sources, the heads of resident missions of the EU countries would do so in keeping with their common position to oppose the death penalty all over the world.

Sri Lankan courts hands down the death sentence. Nevertheless, no execution has taken place since 1976. As a result, those sentenced to death are virtually commuted life in prison.

President Sirisena announced recently that he would place his signature to hang death to two criminals found to be operating drug trafficking from their prison cells with the covert support of the Prison Authorities.

Currently, there are over 1,200 prisoners sentenced to death.

The Justice Ministry announced yesterday that it had submitted a list of 18 such criminals found involved in drug trafficking rackets operating from prison cells.

Sri Lanka voted in favour of the moratorium on the death penalty at a UN forum in 2016, confirming its commitment taken during the 6th World Congress against the Death Penalty in June 2016.

“Wherever death penalty is implemented, we would urge that Government to stop it,” the diplomatic source said,

“Two years ago, Sri Lanka voted in favour of a worldwide moratorium on death penalty. For example, if Sri Lanka were a European country, it could not even become a member of the council of the European Union.

“It is nothing new. The European Union and its member States are campaigning all over the world for the abolition of the death penalty”.

Asked whether the EU diplomatic missions would take it up with the Government, the diplomatic source said: “We will do it in a short time.” (Kelum Bandara)

It is the wish of the people of Sri Lanka. Hence, displeasure or whatever EU is having against the death penalty, they can keep it to themselves. Most of the countries in Asia including Singapore

    AJ Monday, 16 July 2018 01:29 PM

If the EU wants we can hand over these criminals to them and they can look after in their countries.

    Unchikun Sunday, 15 July 2018 09:49 PM

DON'T ALLOW EU TO BULLY US ON THIS MATER, WE ARE A SOVEREIGN COUNTRY CAN MAKE OUR OWN LAWS. WHY DON'T THEY SAY TO COUNTRIES LIKE INDIA, MALAYSIA, SINGAPORE AND THAILAND WHO HAVE DEATH PENALTY FOR DRUG TRAFFICKERS NO DEATH PENALTY, BECAUSE THEY ARE STRONG COUNTRIES ECONOMICALLY WHERE AS WE ARE WEAKER. PRESIDENT AND THE PRIME MINISTER SHOULD NOT GIVE IN, IN THIS MATER. .

    Cisco Sunday, 15 July 2018 10:13 PM

Now definitely government will comply to the request. Initially it was agreed to sign the death penalty to play for the galery.

    Doratupala Sunday, 15 July 2018 10:24 PM

Sri Lankan politicians are known for incoherent , knee jerk , opportunistic reactions and utterances. They have no idea of their pledges to the so called IC , what sort of stuff they voted- co sponsored - at UN level etc. It's an amazing place- Sri Lanka!Wonder how we continued as a single " sovereign" country so far- without getting fragmented like Somalia etc. This hanging will apply only to those who run drug trafficking from their death cells? That itself sounds funny doesn't it?

    Countryman Sunday, 15 July 2018 10:52 PM

President Sirisena is now riding the country to the hell!. If he wants to hang people unto death in the last years of his ruined political career that is a different thing...!!! Perhaps, he should not tarnish the image of country. It is precisely clear that drug business of the country can be fully eradicated if the government has a "genuine need" and "commitment" to do do. If the government can do all the ruling of the country, why not stop the drug deals??? ... ha ha..

    George Sunday, 15 July 2018 10:57 PM

SL has a right to make and implement its own law cos SL isn a EU member state and do not need EU directives for its legal system.

Gamini Abhedeera Monday, 16 July 2018 04:48 AM

SPINELESS EU! they could intimidate countries like Sri Lanka. Why not they demand to revoke death penalty in Singapore / Indonesia / India? Also USADisgraceful Sri Lanka Govt should not bow down to cowards like EU leadership

    Hamlet Monday, 16 July 2018 04:57 AM

    Ranjan Monday, 16 July 2018 08:21 AM

America has capital punishment but the EU wouldn’t have the balls to express their displeasure about it to the Americans. Infact President Trump landed in Europe a few days ago, and began insulting the European leaders left, right, and centre. And it was hilarious to watch these Europeans shaking in their boots and unable to talkback at the American President. This is the true state of the Europeans, they are no longer the rulers of those criminal empires.Their days are over.Americans keep them as a third rate nations. We should never allow them to dictate to us and have to tell them to worry about their own problems and not ours.

    NO Monday, 16 July 2018 08:33 AM

Tell this to USA EU, please have ONE POLICY for all countries.

KOLA KOTIYA Monday, 16 July 2018 08:36 AM

So many countries death penalties are there. In Certain countries details of executions not going to Media but kept in secret including Pakistan,China etc.So EU has no control over this.If things go beyond control Sri Lanka has to implement and nothing to bother about this much..

    suresh Monday, 16 July 2018 08:57 AM

Of course. There must be some backing for drugs from abroad

    kamalhot1 Monday, 16 July 2018 08:57 AM

We have our own troubles, you all don't see it's real weight from outside, if possible come here and live sometimes and evaluate how our general public suffers from all these troubles. So please don't interfere to this, we feel like you all need to keep countries like us at these levels forever, so you all can run NGOs and enjoy your life.

    raj Monday, 16 July 2018 09:23 AM

    Hamlet Monday, 16 July 2018 10:16 AM

Isn't War a Form of Death Penalty for the 'Other' Side?"EU says no to Death penalty" EU has no right to tell Sri Lanka, what we Can or Cannot do, while they help to kill hundreds of People in their so called 'Legal' Wars!
