After a fact finding mission in Jaffna, Law and Order Minister Ranjith Madduma Bandara said yesterday the ‘Ava’ criminal gang was a phenomenon created by some youngsters influenced by violent scenes in Tamil films.

He told Daily Mirror from Jaffna that these Tamil youths were emulating the violent scenes to instill fear before carrying out their criminal activities such as robberies.

"They brandish swords to terrorize the people," the minister said and confirmed that the senior police officers based in the area had briefed him about the ground situation."It is not as bad as it is portrayed by the media and by political opponents," the minister said.

He said the police seized as many as 3,000 kilos of Kerala ganja smuggled into the country last year in the north. (Kelum Bandara)

    asela Saturday, 14 July 2018 11:35 AM

Mr Minister is that the excuse for your incompetency in curbing violence ? what a country with donkeys ruling us . I wonder what action your government would have taken if LTTE prevailed during this time

    Deen Saturday, 14 July 2018 11:39 AM

Totally agree South Indian Tamil films/teledramas are the worst violent ones. Our Government has given an open license to all TV channels to broadcast all nasty low graded episodes without any restrictions.

    Lankan Saturday, 14 July 2018 12:02 PM

Tamil films is available all over the island, "Ava" group violence only in the north. The people believe that some sinister forces behind them, like "Grease yakaya" in the previous government, to disrupt the daily life.

    Samjoe Saturday, 14 July 2018 12:03 PM

Thanks for your songs Hon. Minister. They have given you a challenge when you and IGP in Jaffna an attack in Kodikamam area.. Please watch same Tamil films and control them like a hero.

    wickremasinghe Saturday, 14 July 2018 12:32 PM

Mr. Minister,You are talking rubbish. In the fifties crooks followed the films to rob. .Now they make films after what the crooks do. So don't try to put the blame on others for your lac of efficiency.

    Waco Saturday, 14 July 2018 12:35 PM

Mr. Minister what remedial measures will you be adupting now, to eliminate the AVA.

    Raj Saturday, 14 July 2018 12:36 PM

While it is true Tamil movies are very violent these days and influences gangsters in the north, English movies are more violent and should have more violent groups in western world. But that is not the case. Parents should take more responsibility and Law enforcement should be at full force against these groups. Send few guys caught with a sword to prison for 5 years.

    Arnold Saturday, 14 July 2018 12:59 PM

    Ban Tamil movies now.

    Asdfg Saturday, 14 July 2018 01:18 PM

    Haramanis Saturday, 14 July 2018 01:33 PM

    Ha ha haaaa!!!

Hari Mani Saturday, 14 July 2018 01:52 PM

The real reason for these gang related violence is lack of law and order. The minister can make all kind of stupid statements, but the fact of the matter is the inaction of the police. When these gang related incidence happen police refused to to visit even when called or when complains are made they refuse to register a case. So criminals become empowered and act freely....

Middle Class Jaffna Tamil Living in London Saturday, 14 July 2018 02:33 PM

People in Jaffna have been watching violent Tamil films for decades so this can not be the reason why there is a surge in violent crime and a completely new gangster phenomena in Jaffna in the recent times. It was the LTTE, EPRLF, TELO and other Tamil terror groups who introduced a violent culture ( abductions and killings of Tamil civilians ) to instil fear and rule over them in Jaffna. Now these terror outfits are gone and this has created a vacuum which is gradually being filled by young men belonging to lower castes who are emboldened by the fact that the mainstream Tamils have mostly left Jaffna permanently.

    Buwaa Saturday, 14 July 2018 02:57 PM

Did prabakaran also watch those films or he acted in the films?

    Krishnan Saturday, 14 July 2018 03:04 PM

If the Police and the STF are unable to totally eradicate these parasites then the people of Jaffna would be more than happy for the Army to take over and finish the job comprehensively.

    Gayan Saturday, 14 July 2018 03:29 PM

The previous goon from the area liked to imitate a hollywood hero. Is it a trend in that part of the country?

    Suresh Saturday, 14 July 2018 03:52 PM

Lankan's comment is 100 percent correct.I too suspect some sinister forces are behind these groups.

    Mandayan Saturday, 14 July 2018 03:59 PM

In all those movies, those violent makers are destroyed by a hero. Are you saying you are going to be that hero. Can’t stop my laughter.

    Harini Sunday, 15 July 2018 10:21 AM

So what were the Government and law and order authorities doing while 3000 kilos of Kerala ganja made its way to the North last year on their clock? Greatly inept and inefficient governance and law and order, no?

    AK Sunday, 15 July 2018 07:29 PM

In those movies they also show how politicians rob the people.
