At least four people were injured and several houses were partially damaged due to the strong winds that prevailed across the Southern Province.
DMC Deputy Director Pradeep Kodippili said that roofs of several houses in Deniyaya were damaged following the strong winds experienced this morning.
Four injured were victims of the roof collapse of private tuition class in Deniyaya area.
Disaster Management Centre advised the public to be cautious of roof collapse and tree falling during the heavy winds.
When contacted the Meteorology Department’s duty forecaster said that there is a possibility of increasing the wind speed along the coastal belt and surrounding sea area.
She said that fairly strong gusty winds up to 40-50 kmph can be expected in Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Western, North-Western and North-Central provinces, in Matale and Batticaloa districts tomorrow.
According to the Weather forecast report issued yesterday 4p.m., several spells of showers are predicted in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central provinces and in Galle and Matara districts.
The Departement forecasts light showers at several places in North-Western province.
The coastal belt extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Matara and Hambantota can experience strong gusty winds up to 70 kmph while strong winds up to 50 to 60kmph could be expected in other areas.
Meteorology Department warned the fishing and naval communities to be vigilant in this regard. (Thilanka Kanakarathna)
