Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government Faiszer Musthapha today opposed the Coastal Conservation Department’s decision to remove unauthorized constructions along the coastal belt in Mirissa by May 1.

He explained that the decision made by the Coastal Conservation Department Director Prabath Chandrakeerthi was an arbitrary one.

Minister Musthapha said the Department could remove any illegal construction in the coastal belt, however, if the motive is hamper the livelihood of small entrepreneurs, he is against the move.

Minister further explained that the tourism industry is dominating the service sector in and around the Mirissa area, as such the removal of such places would lead to many unemployment issues among the area residents.

Minister said that it was not the unity Government’s principal to let down the small entrepreneurs, therefore he will advise the authorities to consider the grievances of the masses before reaching any harsh decisions.

Minister Musthapha had reportedly discussed the matter with the small entrepreneurs in Mirissa on Friday (20).

The Coastal Conservation Department took measures to remove illegal constructions along the beaches following the assault on some Dutch tourists at a restaurant in Mirissa a couple of days ago. (Thilanka Kanakarathna)

Looks like this guy is also on the take. If it is an unauthorized construction it should be taken down and the owner punished and commercially taxed on his illegal revenue.

    Casanova Monday, 23 April 2018 08:52 AM

Ash, do you have any ideas what a 10% is capable of doing?

    mnsmart Monday, 23 April 2018 08:56 AM

so these guys are promoting illegal activities. God bless mother Lanka

    Shihab Sunday, 22 April 2018 08:29 PM

    Arnold Sunday, 22 April 2018 08:29 PM

There is a very thin line between "small entrepreneurs" and thugs.

    Ian Sunday, 22 April 2018 08:31 PM

If you want to scare off business people of any size, send in the inland revenue people.

Binara Gunasekera Sunday, 22 April 2018 08:41 PM

Perhaps one of Mr Mustdapas client's may have been affected by this decision . If not, he has no reason.

    Dr.Siri Sunday, 22 April 2018 08:44 PM

Whether it is small entrepreneurs or large scale entrepreneurs, as well the Minsters too should abide by the country's laws. All entrepreneurs should have authorised buildings.

    CS Sunday, 22 April 2018 08:54 PM

The sorry state of our country - the Minister dose not want the law enforced. He is playing this same tune with regard to the removal of 'pavement hawkers' in Colombo.

    RP Sunday, 22 April 2018 09:00 PM

Min. Musthapha Sorry. Cannot agree with you on this.Your thinking is dead wrong. You are encouraging people to continue with their illegal constructions with your statement. Please adhere to Min. John Amaratunge’s plan.Anything illegal must come down not only in Mirissa but everywhere. Couple of places I would like to mention need demolition of illegal constructions are Mount Lavinia and Nuwara Eliya.

    Sheri Monday, 23 April 2018 03:07 PM

    Also illegal constructions in Dehiwela/Wellawatte.

    truth Sunday, 22 April 2018 09:02 PM

    playing to the gallery!!

Mirrissà yaka Sunday, 22 April 2018 09:12 PM

Here we go. Yesterday's report said that for the betterment of the environment, tourism, businesseß and the local public the unauthorized structures along the sea fronts will be removed. Now this backbone less clown wants to stop that. Why don't you get off your elected backside and put up small trading centers and locations where the legitimized business owners can practise their business.

    Sam Sunday, 22 April 2018 09:18 PM

They are not entrepreneurs, they are pimps and drug dealers running brothels and drug dens. Some of your friends perhaps?

    rajitha7 Sunday, 22 April 2018 09:21 PM

This is how the rot begins. No one prevents legally established business. A law-maker should know of all people. Follow the system at all times or chaos will reign.

    Machab Sunday, 22 April 2018 09:26 PM

This is the Main reason that we cant move forward as a nation. When the government tries to move in the right direction to solve a major issue, one politician comes and put forward his two cents worth idea and stalls the whole process and we are back to square one. If the livelihoods of the people are going to get affected by removing ILLEGAL CONSTRUCTIONS on the beach, that effected comunity also has a social responsibility to maintain peaceful and secured environment for the visitors without further indulging in illegal activities. And as a senior Minister you have a social responsibility Not to represent people who get involved in illegal activities.

    Zameer Sunday, 22 April 2018 09:37 PM

Minister Mustafa your small entrepreneurs should do business in own property not on illegal land. Obviously it comes from the top of you people are corrupt then obviously your followers will be the same

    rew Monday, 23 April 2018 08:22 AM

What do you expect from Politicians who are corrupt in one form or the other?

    RN Sunday, 22 April 2018 09:44 PM

This is a negative message because It shows that every member of govt. have a different stance. They should be united, and the minister should speak of his ministry only. That is the problem is SL. I am not for yahapalana govt. Only cabinet spokesman or relevant minister should state govt. position of issues.

Angoda Bakka Sunday, 22 April 2018 09:45 PM

Then, register them and issue licenses under your Ministry and make them accountable. They must not shelter "Beach Thugs" and pay them Kappam.

    GC Sunday, 22 April 2018 09:47 PM

If something is illegal, why should it not be removed? If not, what a bad example it would be, leading to more and more illegal construction, for example, along railway lines. Why not then allow dealing in drugs, stealing, robbery, mugging, prostitution, clearing of Wilpattu and Knuckles etc because then that will affect the livelihood of those illegally engaged in them? We have to support the straight acting public servants, instead of overruling them, if we need a corruption free country with honest people.

    Thomas Monday, 23 April 2018 08:21 AM

Mustafa was a former Deputy Minister of Tourism, his attitude will kill tourism in Sri Lanka.Only unauthorized structures to be removed, which is within the law

    LAWRY Monday, 23 April 2018 08:42 AM

One needs thug power to go ahead and build illegally and run a business. So they are not sweet citizens. Keep those who will now pay to fulfil conditions.

Keyzer Sose Monday, 23 April 2018 08:58 AM

Common Guys, he is doing his job, that is, manipulating the system to favor his clients. End result,Lawyer becomes richer.

    Ad Monday, 23 April 2018 09:00 AM

Three wheel drivers, payment hawkers also belong to same category. Is FM trying to bend laws to suit them or the other majority

    Damindra Monday, 23 April 2018 09:00 AM

Mr Musthapa....Are you getting something from them to protect thugs

    gajaman Monday, 23 April 2018 09:08 AM

How on earth did this moron become a minister?

    Ranjan Monday, 23 April 2018 09:26 AM

    VJ Monday, 23 April 2018 09:27 AM

In a civilized country, the minister would be asked to resign for making such a statement. He is openly supporting illegal activities.

Mr. Minister you should read the comments you have received before expressing further on the subject. I cant stop laughing.

    Mohan Tuesday, 24 April 2018 10:24 AM

Only Gotabaya Rajapakse has done good job for removing unauthorized constructions in Colombo. All unauthorized constructions which are disturbing public should be removed without considering their political affiliation.

    kudson Tuesday, 24 April 2018 10:46 AM

    Sambo Tuesday, 24 April 2018 11:48 AM

So you will even let people build shelters on the middle of the because they don't have a place to live. These should be planned where these small businesses should be done. Unfortunately we done have people in this country who can plan for the future and do things. Instantly put up and instantly pull down.

    NA Tuesday, 24 April 2018 03:30 PM

Saliya Weerasooriya Tuesday, 24 April 2018 07:17 PM

There should not be any illegle activities ( Consruction , service etc.) In any part of the island. There is a legle process for everything. Anyone violating should be taken to task. We do mot need these type of ministers who is condoning and promoting illigle activities for personal bebifits. Hope the authorities go ahead with the plan of demolishing all illigle cosstructions in all tourist areas not only in Mirissa. We do not need yet another minister like the one who destroyed Wilpattu...
