The Wild Life Department has launched a special investigation into the death of Tusker ‘Missaka,’ that frequented the Yala Sanctuary, following an order issued by the Tissamaharama Magistrate’s Court.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Yala National Park Warden D. P. Siyasinghe said on Saturday that a special team had been assigned to investigate the incident.

“The post-mortem examination was done on Friday. A team comprising wild life officers, police officers and several army officers was assigned to conduct the investigations,” he said.

Mr. Siyasinghe said the tusker may have died from injuries sustained from trap gun.

“It was hard to locate the exact place where the tusker was shot. The tusker had been shot two or three weeks ago and it may have roamed the Sanctuary with the injuries,” he said.

The tusker died from sepsis on Thursday morning.(Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

Significance of wildlife and existence of all animal population is only understood by those who lives in developed nations. Sad truth is many folks who lives in developing or third-world nations has no respect to nor has any value of an animal life.

Time has come for the United Nations to take over the full control of fauna and flora within Lankan territorities, as Sri-Lankan governments in the previous and in the present were neglecting to protect their own endangered wild life/ fauna and flora.

Next fauna and flora convention is scheduled in SLK year 2019 yet we allow such atrocities to take place right under our noses. how can sri lanka participate in a convention let alone hosting one when you have this type of wild life tragedies on daily basis ?

If all responsible parties do their job properly, these won't happen. What is the big idea of having those investigations once the fatal damage is done? Ultimately nothing will emerge, and it will be another tragedy only.
