India approves death penalty for rape of girls under 12

Indian cabinet today approved the death penalty for those convicted of raping girls below the age of 12 years amid outrage in the country after a string of horrific cases of sexual violence, the Reuters reported a whort while ago.

In the emergency meeting called by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the cabinet also passed an executive order to amend the criminal law to also include more drastic punishment for convicted rapists of girls below the age of 16 years.

According to Reuters, sexual violence against women is a highly charged political issue in India, where protests regularly erupt about entrenched violence against women and the failure to protect them.

Many people have criticized Modi’s government for not doing enough to protect the country’s women, piling pressure on his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as India heads towards a general election due next year.

Coz in some cases its difficult to decide weather it was mutual sex later termed as rape or actual rape.

As stated, it maybe difficult to convincingly prove whether it is actual rape or revenge complaint after consensual sex in the case of adults. Yet I feel age could be increased to below 16.

Indian Army operates with high ethics and standards. Many Indians laid down their life for safety of our Sri Lankan neighbors though in my view India should not have sent troops to Sri Lanka at that point of time.

This is not a wise idea. Most rapes(over 90%) of underage girls are done inside the house by family and relatives. Now there will be greater pressure on the child to shut up.

Whatever any new law passed by any Indian governmentDeath sentences will not be imposed on any indian rapistsIndian courts and judges are well known corrupted culpritsAnd there is nothing to be surprised when a rapist is freed after a few months.
