The Tusker ‘Missaka,’ that frequented the Yala Sanctuary, died yesterday morning after suffering from a trap gun injury that persisted for over two weeks, park authorities said.

Yala National Park Warden D. P. Siyasinghe speaking to Daily Mirror said the tusker died due to a wound in his left front leg which had gotten worse and injuries sustained by it close to his left eye.

“The tusker was found walking around with severe injuries near the Bandu Wewa in close proximity to the Ondaatje Bungalow in Kataragama last Sunday (15),” he said.

The 35-years-old tusker’s wound had worsened since it was spotted last and the wound had deepened to measure about a foot long and a foot wide, he said.“There were two more wounds suffered by it near the left eye which was suspected to have been caused by gunshots,” he said.

Three veterinarians, who treated the elephant for three days continuously, observed that the tusker seemed to have sustained these injuries two to three weeks ago.

However, the tusker died from sepsis last morning after a valiant struggle, Mr. Siyasinghe said. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

So warden....... the elephant frequented yala sanctuary and none of your park warden noticed this for 2 to 3 weeks....Seriously what do you all really do???? The government should take full responsibility. These are national treasures. These animals are our soul.

Where are those elephant lovers who are against taking elephants in Buddhist processions? Never heard that such groups gone to help the wild elephants in the jungle when those are in distress. Not even water given during droughts, Pinnawela elephants must be given to processions and taken back to the orphanage. Then breeding will occur. Rogue wild elephants shall be captured and auctioned to prevent, deaths like this tusker.

People who shot the tusker should perish with karma with worst injuries to them then they will realise the reality of lives trying to hurt others

Sad to see we are losing all these treasures due to our own activities. Biggest question is - what all the officials are doing? Which party's neglect of duties?

The so called Wildlife officials and Doctors must have been waiting for the TUSKER to die to remove the TUSKS.They never bothered to treat the wound, they only monitored and waited for him to breathe his last. What goes around will come around.

Neglecting wardens useless veterinarians and a government who needs all money to importe expensive cars for useless MPs via DM Android App

What a tragedy. In African national parks, there are round the clock armed wardens to keep the poachers at bay. In Sri Lanka we provide round the clock protection to our useless politicians while our national treasure is neglected . How many tuskers have died over the last few months. What a shame.

Killing elephants must be punished with the capital punishment. Law should be amended

What a sad state the country has come to... shocking! Sad to say the least for the animal and the state of affairs!
