President Maithripala Sirisena, who met a group of Sri Lankans in London, said political clashes were not only in Sri Lanka and even British Premier Theresa May had to cancel the meeting with CHOGM leaders to be held at Tuesday noon, owing to the situation in British Parliament.

“Some people in our country think political clashes are only in Sri Lanka. British PM Theresa May cancelled the meeting which was scheduled to be held on Tuesday with Heads of Governments because of the situation in Parliament,” he said.

He said when he paid a visit to Japan recently with Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva, they witnessed about 2,000 people protesting outside Japanese Prime Minister’s office demanding his resignation.

“For a moment I thought whether that was a group of people from Sri Lanka had arrived in Japan. When we came out from the Prime Minister’s office after having discussions with the Premier, the number of protesters had increased to 5,000. Today, these kinds of political and economic clashes are common in most countries,” he said.

President Sirisena reiterated that Sri Lanka has achieved victories in completing development projects to ensure the sustainability of the country.

He said there was no shortcoming in the development projects which are being carried out rapidly.

Meanwhile, he said international relations of Sri Lanka had strengthened in the recent past.

“I’m not saying this because I’m the President. We can win the hearts of everyone maintaining a balanced and a non-aligned foreign policy. Our Government has fortified international relations. Everyone helps us and treat us well now. We should look at the country positively,” he said. (Sunil Jayasiri in London)

Mr President, You have failed to curtail the protests and strikes sponsored by JO. Now you are trying to find excuses or parallels. If you cannot do your job hand over the country to a person who can deliver. When all were crying for SF to be appointed Defence Minister you were deaf. People of Sri Lanka know you better

    ranmala Thursday, 19 April 2018 11:42 AM

Well said. The entire country know the deals. Deliver otherwise same fate will befall like MR

    nimal Thursday, 19 April 2018 04:19 PM

if you think SF is the solution, think again. He is a power angry animal. He did not win the war by himself or with his own army. Yet does not qualify him to be a Minister to run the law and order. He has no discipline but revenge

In Britain, the Prime Minister respects the parliament and go there to answer questions, even by cancelling other appointments, instead of telling other people outside the parliament, whether it is about another (prime) minister or pressure from diplomats.

You do your job. Don’t look others doing. Lankan security forces looted Muslims properties and burned. You traveled out of the country.

The difference being, British parliament sittings are disrupted, due to government decision to bomb Syrian Gas/chemical factories consequent to Russians Nerve gas killing a spy in SW London and not because, someone wants to appoint his preferred PM thru' the backdoor post Municipal council election which they could not win and boycotting the scheduled cabinet meeting to pressurise the government.

President speaks of protests in Japan and issues in Britain as analogy to justify the disturbances in SriLanka ..Nay we like to tell the P residents to indicate to the President the need for protests for indicates how humanity rallies to express concerns ..British democracy evolved on those protests by activist down the ages so was the Indian freedom movement ..

I wish some one had told the President what was and still an emergency in the British Parliament that made the British Minister to cancel the meeting. It is being called the Windrush affair. Windrush is the name of a ship that brought thousands of West Indians on the request of the colonial master Britain to work in the country to rebuild the infrastructure after the Second World War.They also brought with them their families. These people had entered Britain legally, contributed a lot its economy and had lived in Britain for many decades. But very recently out of the blue British government told these people that they don’t have proper documentation to stay in Britain and forced them from their jobs, arrested and put a few in remand prisons and ordered others to leave Britain. This heartless and cruel racist action by Britain on the people who helped to rebuild Britain was being carried out secreatly. Few days ago this secreat was out and Britain is now caught with its pants down .

Well. Around the world lot of protest may happen, But in Sri Lanka they disturb day to day lives of general public. Here they protest if someone pass the wind loudly.

    alex Thursday, 19 April 2018 08:54 AM

was there also a protest against private medical colleges in Britain and Japan

    Thursday, 19 April 2018 10:00 AM

Their protests against corruption were successful. Former South Korean leader jailed. In Siri-Lanka former political thieves still playing to grab PM post

    neil Thursday, 19 April 2018 08:57 AM

Mr President , after your recent dishonesty and opportunistic attitudes, you are no longer welcome by such people. Neither most in your own country. Face the reality.

Dear Mr PresidentIt is much amazement that you would make such an irresponsible statement as a head of state. There is no substance nor does it fit to be statement from a multiracial country head of state. We as sri lankans are our worried and in no way can we be worried about other countries internal affairs it is up to the Foreign Ministry to keep tab on things and advise you accordingly. The simple fact was you as the head of defence failed to stop the Looting of Muslims for 3 days. The Looters were a maximum of 300 to 400 and yes not from the area but imported from other areas. Our riot squad all-most 2 to 3 times a month control protesters numbering 3 to 4 thousand but were unable to handle just 300 to 400 looters, this is where your administration was caught with pants down. So please refrain from such absurd statements. Thank You

A president who doesn't study the political situation in a foreign country before visiting itThis reminds me an old saying in Sinhalese "Even a fool can acts like a pundit as long as he keeps his mouth shut"

Protests and strikes can happen anywhere but the purposes may different. Why are you trying to tally those with ours? Just to runaway from responsibilities?

    Subash Thursday, 19 April 2018 04:05 PM

What kind of a fool is MS, he can't even recognize the Japanese and Srilankans

Better you goto japan and contest the election there, you will be doing a big help to us sir...Please go

    Upul Thursday, 19 April 2018 04:27 PM

He is just trying to evade problems and issues that he has to face by just giving some flimsy excuses. If you are the president, you have to solve the problems of the people, or just quit without giving these lame excuses.
