The committee appointed to look into the reorganization of the United National Party (UNP) in its report had recommended that Party Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe should name a person who would take over the party leadership as and when he steps down from the leadership.
A member of the committee said it had come out with this suggestion as its members were of the opinion that it would be easier for the party to move forward when a suitable person who would take over the party is named. Also, it was stated that many in the party had wanted to feel secured in the future.
The committee had also recommended that Deputy Leader should be given more powers such as the authority to go around the country organizing party activities.
It was also highlighted that vital decisions on the future of the party would be made on March 22.
Meanwhile, the UNP Parliamentary group which met last evening had decided to work unanimously to defeat the no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Wickremesinghe. The Prime Minister had told the parliamentary group that one should not panic about the No confidence as it had not been handed over to speaker yet. He had also told the group that such a motion would be taken up for debate as soon as possible once it is handed over to Speaker and would be defeated. (Yohan Perera)

There is no suitable parliamentarian to lead the UNP right now. Only Wickremesinghe enjoys support from the two main minority communities. Both Sajeeth Premadasa and Navin Senanayake are considered as communal in their outlook towards Tamils and Muslims. The fault with Wickremesinghe is he does not take decisions, He vacillates as we saw in the aftermath of Bond scam. Even after Mahendran's removal from the CB, he wanted to reappoint him to the same post. When that failed he kept him as his economic advisor. In the issue of importing luxury vehicle permits, he buckled down under pressure wasting millions, if not billions of rupees at a time when the country's economy was limping. Same with raising the salaries of public servants a politically popular move, but economically a disaster. People expected him to act rationally and not like a drunken sailor.

UNP should name the next presidential candidate (Karu Jayasuriya) and next PM (Sajith Premadasa)and remove Ravi from all posts and Ranil can be the President of party and take a senior ministerial post like foreign minster when they ready for the next election just hanging on to power will only destroy the party

What a shame Mr Ranil. Please give it up and retire because 1. Majority of Sri Lankan voted against you2. You showed many many years opposition that proves your inability.3. Majority of Sri Lankans cannot be wrong.4. You need to be a real Sri Lankan but not to be in the middle of nowherePeople will respect you at this moment. It will not happen if you are going to be crazy and greedy. Please remember how people disrespect Mr Premadasa and Mr Fonseka politically who is excellent as army commander.

"The committee had also recommended that Deputy Leader should be given more powers such as the authority to go around the country organizing party activities" - Damn the country but secure the seats! That's the present day politics in Sri Lanka.

UNCLE NEPHEW PARTY (not niece ! ) Tuesday, 20 March 2018 06:04 AM
" PM asked to name a successor" A tall order ! - I don't think RW has ever thought about it OR has the capacity and the guts to think about this matter. - of course it was easy for JR as he had a relation to push up.
Welagedara Tuesday, 20 March 2018 06:07 AM
Present leader has pool of contenders. Akila,Malik or Sagala are well trained for the job.
Jaffna Logic Tuesday, 20 March 2018 06:15 AM
How about the Field Marshal,a suitable successor.
S.P.Ramkumar Tuesday, 20 March 2018 06:38 AM
Out of very very few UNP party leaders direct the party to move Democratically, As once Our President H.E. Mithripala Srisena told at Sri Kotha that if UNP is not there is No Democratic in Sri Lanka. I hope this large party will change it leadership with respectfully and with very casting vote Democratically.
ANTON Tuesday, 20 March 2018 06:47 AM
..........AND THAT SUCCESSOR SHOULD NOT BE DEAF AND DUMB LIKE THE PEOPLE APPOINTED FOR LAW AND ORDER POSITION.
ANTON Tuesday, 20 March 2018 06:51 AM
EXAMPLES OF SOME SUCCESSORS , WHO COULD GO AROUND THE COUNTRY, APPOINTED BY OUR LEADERS ARE KINGSLEY, DEE MOO, DINGIRI BANDA............ YOUNG, SMART AND ENERGETIC EH ?
AJ Tuesday, 20 March 2018 09:07 AM
Why is the successor appointed by Ranil? The successor should be collectively chosen by the peoples representatives and party members.
Nish Tuesday, 20 March 2018 09:12 AM
Another example why UNP is a complete joke now. What is the point of democracy if the current leaders names the next leader?
Dils Tuesday, 20 March 2018 09:33 AM
Harin Fernando for the job be bold new thinking show the people at least now you can make a difference. Rest assured he can take the UNP to greatness. Seniors will not have impact
Ishan Tuesday, 20 March 2018 09:34 AM
Sajith is the person, Deputy Navin. Ranil is weak in decision making he will appoint a another committee for this.
Guest Tuesday, 20 March 2018 09:48 AM
It would be a bold decision but someone like Harsha should be given the leadership position. He had actually done something with whatever he is given and has the respect of the people. People are just tired of seeing the same old faces with no development happening in the country....
Krishantha Tuesday, 20 March 2018 09:55 AM
Wijedasa Rajapaksha is the most suitable person in the UNP right now
Katie Tuesday, 20 March 2018 10:04 AM
AJ is correct, RW should not be appointing his successor but the people and I vote Sajith Premadasa.
Geeth shirantha Tuesday, 20 March 2018 10:09 AM
This is only a stage drama. Finally , committee will suggest to increase the power of deputy leader and premier will secure His present position. After well - establish the premier back, deputy leader power will be norminal. this is the process .
SAM Tuesday, 20 March 2018 10:13 AM
I say! Are you sleeping or dreaming? We'll see to it. You please pack up and go. Else you will appoint another nut case like AM.
Aruna Tuesday, 20 March 2018 10:14 AM
I think the best person to lead the party is Eran Wickramaratne. He is the most honest politician in Sri Lanka today. He is well educated and capable of handling the job.
Doug Tuesday, 20 March 2018 10:22 AM
Please don't name anyone other than yourself Ranil, you and only you would be the best person to totally destroy the UNP altogether.
kakopappa Tuesday, 20 March 2018 10:25 AM
Should be Ranja. Ranja for PM!
VA Tuesday, 20 March 2018 12:17 PM
Will he be humble enough to name Sajith ?Instead he might further decide to lead the UNP to its Royal grave.
Chari Tuesday, 20 March 2018 12:25 PM
Sajith Premadasa has to be the correct choice.
Brainmaster Tuesday, 20 March 2018 12:24 PM
My choice would be Eran via DM Android App
Boston Tuesday, 20 March 2018 12:27 PM
He can appoint himself to be his successor. Ravi k can be the deputy
Konde bandapu cheena Tuesday, 20 March 2018 12:33 PM
Lets give to Fonny
Rajan Tuesday, 20 March 2018 12:39 PM
UNP need a mature politician to lead the Party. The system is corrupt and most with vested interest. Therefore, an un-selfish politician with a love for the country is the answer.I think Mangala Samaraweera is the best choice.
Reader Tuesday, 20 March 2018 12:42 PM
Successor to be selected by the party membership and not by Ranil alone. JRJ had to give into public outcry and get Premadasa as the successor who brought up the party by winning elections .
Vanna Tuesday, 20 March 2018 01:39 PM
No need to name the deputy leader. Ammend the party constitution so that the Presidential and Priministerial candidates are choosen by elected members of parliament, PCs, MCs, Pradesheeya Sabbas.
Ajith Tuesday, 20 March 2018 01:46 PM
My vote is for Harin young and energetic. Looks like non racist.
Sri Wickrema Tuesday, 20 March 2018 01:50 PM
The other day Sajith gave an assurance in public rally that all the unemployed graduates would be given govt jobs. Now we have nearly 1.5 million in govt service. That is a huge burden to the country. A politician of this vision is going to lead a party as well as the country can any citizen have a hope for the future of Sri Lanka ?
Mahal Tuesday, 20 March 2018 05:26 PM
Sajith, Thalatha and Naveen, all suitable.
