Colombo Additional Magistrate Dharshika Wimalasiri today recalled the arrest warrant issued against former Minister Mervyn Silva's son Malaka.
The suspect surrendered to the court today and tendered a medical report over his absence during the last court proceedings.
Malaka, accused of allegedly assaulting a Scottish couple at a nightclub in Colombo 2014, was not present at the court when the case was taken up previously prompting the magistrate to issue an arrest warrant.
The further Magisterial inquiry was postponed to March 6. (Shehan Chamika Silva)

This shows the standard of the judiciary in Sri Lanka. There is no independence at all and its manipulated by some people who have authority which is very sad.

When an arrest warrant is issued and the culprit surrenders later, it means delays and extra expenses to Police and Courts. There must be a fine unless court informed by lawyer that client unable to come and show adequate evidence to support on the court date. This is ridiculous and Court should think of the delays and expenses to taxpayers.

It is so easy to obtain a Medical Certificate from any number of "quacks" around. The Police should have checked back to ascertain Malaka Silva's movements on that particular day. For instance it would have been easy to check the register of the Fitness center of Colombo 07 which Malaka patronizes regularly.
