President Maithripala Sirisena made a reference to the Supreme Court to ascertain whether he can serve in office for six years because there were divergent views on his term limit in civil and political circles, his office said in a statement.

The statement said the President had sought the opinion of the Supreme Court as otherwise it could lead to confusion.

The statement said his predecessors had also made similar references to the Supreme Court in this manner. It said it was a right guaranteed in the Constitution.

Assuming that DM reported the words of the statement correctly, the given reason seems disingenuous. if there was a doubt of the length of the term due to 'divergent views' then the question could have been 'can you clarify when my term ends' not 'can I serve for six years'!

Even if the sc decides it is 6 years, if m3 has some honesty he should resign after 5 years

Resign at the end of 5 years as the last elected President also promised

Why is that ? People elected him for six years. Later the constitution was changed to reduce the length of presidency for 5 years. But that was passed by parliament and not by a referendum. So the first time that a president will get elected for 5 years with the approval of the people , would be at the next presidential elections . Me, along with 6.2 million people in this country voted for this man to be the president of our country for six years , and the only way that can be changed is by the people and not by any MPs. Every single one of us who voted for him have a fundamental right to file a petition to uphold the six year term , as this is what we voted for , and nothing can undermine our voice other than a referendum

They all come to power promising to abolish the Executive Presidency. Once they taste the power, they all try and enjoy it as long as they can.

Mr. President, please note that people did not vote for you in 2015 to go and hug the SLFP leadership. They did not vote for you to protect SLFP rougues. Today you are dancing to the tunes of some SLFP rougues. Hats off for the PCom work regarding he bond scam. Now do he same for the MR era collossal robberies. Then you will have some credibility.
