Retired employees of the Railways Department had been called in following the declaration of railway services as Essential Service by the President.
President Maithripala Sirisena on Saturday declared railway services as an Essential Service, following the strike launched by railway employees on Wednesday.
Railways Department’s Additional General Manager Wijeya Samarasinghe said all engine drivers, railway guards, station masters and controllers, who had retired and were willing to provide their services, had been requested to report to the department.
Meanwhile, he said the all current employees on strike would be expelled, if they failed to report to duty today.
The railway trade unions launched the strike demanding sort out salary anomalies and stop the recruitment of Driver Assistants.

In cases of this kind, enough Army engineers should be available to drive locomotives. The strikers should be fired immediately. Anyone who tries to hinder or threaten workers who wanted to report for duty should immediately be remanded.
