Vidya’s murder: Seven sentenced to death

Seven of the nine accused in Sivaloganathan Vidya’s abduction, rape and murder, were sentenced to death by a three-judge bench of Jaffna High Court a short while ago.

Jaffna High Court Judge M. Elancheliyan while sentencing them said the first and the seventh accused should be released because of the lack of evidence against them.

The seven men found guilty were also sentenced to 30 years rigorous imprisonment and ordered to pay Rs.1 million as compensation to Vidya’s family and in the event they failed to pay, the Jaffna High Court said their term of imprisonment should be extended.

What is the punishment for those helped and tried to cover up the case? The verdict is highly commendable. Unfortunately they will never be hanged as for the Srilankan systems. We salute the judiciary!

Example to south. Case finished within 2 years and 4 months shorter period.Is it wrong to give judgement early?Ranjan can show this to CJ. Majority of cases in south are delayed.

Absolutely, Justice delayed is Justice denied. Spare a thought for the parents of this beautiful girl full of life. Nothing will bring her back to them but at least they can rest because their little girl got justice and got it early. It is nice to know that there are judges who do not succumb to pressure.

A murder most foul. To hell with human right activists, at least for this case, activate the death sentence for the animals who did this. They do not deserve to live after what they did to the poor child. Allowing them to live would be a crime against mankind.

I agree the sentence should be carried out and I think a national petition should be drawn up calling on the president to sack the Child Minister and remove her from parliament! She should also be prosecuted for attempting to pervert the course of justice by intervening in the case!!!
