Vidya’s murder: Seven sentenced to death

2017-09-27 13:13:10

Seven of the nine accused in Sivaloganathan Vidya’s abduction, rape and murder, were sentenced to death by a three-judge bench of Jaffna High Court a short while ago.

Jaffna High Court Judge M. Elancheliyan while sentencing them said the first and the seventh accused should be released because of the lack of evidence against them.

The seven men found guilty were also sentenced to 30 years rigorous imprisonment and ordered to pay Rs.1 million as compensation to Vidya’s family and in the event they failed to pay, the Jaffna High Court said their term of imprisonment should be extended.

18-year-old Sivaloganathan Vidya of Pungudutivu in Jaffna was abducted, sexually abused and murdered in May 2015. (Romesh Madushanka)

What is the punishment for those helped and tried to cover up the case? The verdict is highly commendable. Unfortunately they will never be hanged as for the Srilankan systems. We salute the judiciary!

Let the judgement serve as a deterrent message for those who think that they can get away by committing crimes of this nature

Great. Since death penalty is not carried out in Sri Lanka, there should not be a parole to any of these animals under any circumstances.

They should be kept in the prisons until they die as death sentence is not carried out at present in Sri Lanka for crime they committed against an innocent school girl.

Example to south. Case finished within 2 years and 4 months shorter period. Is it wrong to give judgement early?Ranjan can show this to CJ. Majority of cases in south are delayed.

Absolutely, Justice delayed is Justice denied. Spare a thought for the parents of this beautiful girl full of life. Nothing will bring her back to them but at least they can rest because their little girl got justice and got it early. It is nice to know that there are judges who do not succumb to pressure.

A murder most foul. To hell with human right activists, at least for this case, activate the death sentence for the animals who did this. They do not deserve to live after what they did to the poor child. Allowing them to live would be a crime against mankind.

Death penalty should be carried out on such cases. The argument that it doesn't prevent crime is a statistical data for records. They have no right to live. That is it.

Certain non-pardonable should attract "death penalty". Hang these beasts without any mercy .Let it to be a lesson for many those who indulge in such kind of cruel activities.I strongly recommend that such punishments also to be given to those politicians who involved in scams and other anti national activities.

I agree the sentence should be carried out and I think a national petition should be drawn up calling on the president to sack the Child Minister and remove her from parliament! She should also be prosecuted for attempting to pervert the course of justice by intervening in the case!!!

For the third time in my life I regret not having the punishments meted out for rapist/murderers in the past when Kings ruled the country prior to English invasion. First one was Rita John murder case, second was the Hokandara murders and third Vidya murder.
