Mahendran not bound to give evidence as he is not SL citizen

President’s Counsel Romesh de Silva yesterday reserved the right to make an application to withdraw from testifying before the Commission at any point if Arjuna Mahenran was not treated with dignity at the proceedings or being insulted by the officers assisting the Commission.

Mr. De Silva was of the view that Arjuna Mahendran was not a citizen in Sri Lanka and therefore could not be compelled to give evidence.

However, considering all circumstances, Mr. De Silva yesterday said that Mr. Mahendran would testify before the Commission to prove his innocence and to assist the Commission.

Mr. De Silva requested the Commission to treat his client with respect and sought the Commission to have a control on officials assisting the commission.

The Commission said that it was well aware on treating on witnesses it had endeavored to treat equally to every witness. (Shehan Chamika Silva)

If this is true, that is exactly the concern raised by general public. If he is not responsible for giving evidence because he is a foreigner, how he would be able to take responsible for one of the highest position in the country.

Make sole responsible the person who appointed Mr. Mahendra there and let Mr. Mahendran to take a flight to Singapore.

Ohoo ... after robbing the country he realized that he is not a citizen of SL. IF that is the case he would have declined the offer for CBSL governor's post stating that he is not a SL citizen. Being a non citizen if he has accepted the post of CBSL governor then he has to abide and respect court proceedings of SL. Prove that he is innocent then he may live in whatever the country he has citizenship.

If not being an SL citizen was no barrier for Mahendran to hold CB governor post, how come it's a barrier for him now to be held accountable for abuse of that very public office?

Mahendran is not a Diplomat, if he or any overseas visitor commit a crime they must face the Sri Lankan laws. This is an investigation to see if he faulted. He has to surrender to the legal provisions of the Commission. Treating him with dignity is a matter for the lawyers and the judges. Generally lawyers do not know the meaning of the word "Dignity"

If Arjun Mahendran had a right to be appointed as a governor of Central Bank of Sri Lanka thus having Singapore citizenship, the same law can be applied in his case to arrest him.

Get PM to answer for getting this non Sri Lankan citizen appointed and even recommending extension when there was strong objection from within the Cabinet. Thanks to the President he was removed.
