Asgiriya Maha Vihara Chapter Registrar Ven. Medagama Dhammananda Thera making a special statement yesterday, regarding the insults made on Buddhist monks by certain politicians, expressed concern and condemned the act.

The Thera said: "At a time like this when President Maithripala Sirisena has taken a timely action to introduce an insurance cover for the old Buddhist monks , there are various government ministers and parliamentarians who have made insulting remarks by levelling allegations in various forms. It has to be treated as a downright insult.”

“There are politicians who have been rejected by the people and become popular in various fields. They act without any good feeling towards the country and without an understanding about the values, religious and cultural background and whims and fancies of the general public,”the Thera said.

The Thera said political party leaders should select candidates wisely and intelligently at the forthcoming elections without giving permission to candidates who are involved in unbecoming acts. (J.A.L. Jayasinghe)

Buddhist monks themselves must know how to earn and maintain respect without resorting to condemn the politicians' statements.

    Normally, the truth hurts!

    lion Friday, 15 September 2017 07:18 AM

Rev monk it is not the mistake of laymen. it is solely the mistake of snga community. The sad truth is people are disgusted with the behavior of some of the monks in the society. They are instead of propagating damma get involve with politicians for their personal gains. So please request monks to behave in a such a way to earn respect from the people.

There is certainly some discontent among genuine buddhists regarding the clergy as well and it may be better if the heirarchy at Asgiriya and Malwatta look inwards at their own priests and really make a hard assessment whether the vociferous are strictly following the Buddha's doctrine. Laymen can have more leeway in these matters while clergy sshould be more circumspect in both words and deeds. The behaviour of some priests at protests is a obvious case in point.

What about the appalling manner in which Buddhist monks act? They or any religious leader is not above the law.

    city Friday, 15 September 2017 07:33 AM

Agree, but based on certain comments by the politicians and media why not the chief incumbents cross check with the monks who are accused.

    Dam Friday, 15 September 2017 07:43 AM

"Hamuduruwanae"We are are Buddhist too. Why don't you discipline the the monks according to the Lord Buddha's teaching. Don't blame the people

    AjithZ Friday, 15 September 2017 08:01 AM

Please have some mechanism to discipline and control the Buddhist Monks. Surely you can see that the behavior of some of them is a disgrace to the religion. No point complaining without doing that.

    city Friday, 15 September 2017 08:14 AM

Agree, but why not the chief incumbents cross check the accused monks.

The age old saying "What is sow is what you reap". Today politics is a dirty game and keep off. Educated ones keep off this game.

I am a Buddhist, and not a politician. Being an outsider to these events, to me both these sides are responsible for this sad situation. Some politicians and Buddhist priests are creating all these nonsense without understanding their roles to be played. I also noted that some Buddhist priests are trying to play politician's and trade unionist's role and vice versa. So not only political leaders of this country, religious leaders too shall be active in maintaining discipline in their environment.

    Snowy Friday, 15 September 2017 08:55 AM

Just a bit of history. It was from 1956 that this problem started. The respect the people has for monks have been dwindling since then. We have seen monks climb walls and gates and shouting political slogans. So I am not surprised to see this happen. It is time the monks put their house in order first.

    alex Friday, 15 September 2017 08:56 AM

you get the respect you deserve

    S.P.RAMKUMAR Friday, 15 September 2017 08:59 AM

These are common in politics, Lord Buddha gave up politics and came to spiritual path, We all have to respect Monks,

    Parakrama Friday, 15 September 2017 09:01 AM

most people believe the present day monks insult themselves and Buddhism at large by their own uncouth behaviour and engaging in activity 'other' than safeguarding the sahasanaya.

There is a big difference between Buddhist Clergy and men who get into robes only for the benefits of buddhist clergy.

If political parties try to find candidates who do not do unbecoming acts they will have to import them

    arjuna Friday, 15 September 2017 11:08 AM

I am a Hindu . During my school days on my way to school I used to see monks begging for alms and most shops along the Galle Road irrespective of their religious belief will make an offering and worship the monks . Un fortunately I don't see this ritual any more.Politics has ruined the respect all of us had for monks unfortunately . Having said that I am sure in villages there must be thousands of Monks living with the community and guiding them in the correct path

    robert Friday, 15 September 2017 03:02 PM

Hi ArjunVillage monks too now a days go in nice cars. Sitaution is such that the community has to to guide them how to behave like a buddhist monk

TO BE EXPECTED WHEN BUDDHIST CLERGY GET INVOLVED IN POLITICS AND PROTESTS.

    ruwani Friday, 15 September 2017 05:09 PM

Agree whole heartedly with Ranjan. Some but not all buddhist priests are some of the wealthiest ppl in the country. If the priests practise the dhamma according to lord buddha' s preachings the Sangha will get respect. The way they behave no wonder that ppl have no regard.

    Park Friday, 15 September 2017 05:54 PM

Buddhist clergy, especially the Mahanayake getting involved in politics without looking after the Sasana and his own monks is a major problem in SL. When looking at Buddhism, its sad to note the difference between the practice of Mahayana and Theravada is widening. Mahayana Sect is becoming a politically motivated violent sector as we see in SL and Myanmar Mahayana Buddhism is moving towards a racist group where as Mahayana as practiced in East Asia is following a peaceful path.
