The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) yesterday warned of a further restriction in the supply of electricity due to the reduction of hydro-power electricity generation as the water levels in the reservoirs had dropped drastically to 36 per cent of capacity.

CEB media spokesman Sulakshana Jayawardana said the daily electricity demand in the country had increased by over 2,400 megawatts (MW) with 44 Gigawatt-hours (GWh) used in the day-time alone.

Mr. Jayawardana told Daily Mirror that county’s total capacity is 4,000 MW and from that 1,350MW was generated using large scare hydro-power plants while another 350 MW was generated by small-scale hydro-power plants.

He said the prevailing dry weather has severely affected hydro-power generation with the need to supply water for drinking and harvesting necessitating further cuts in the supply of electricity to consumers. He requested the public to use electricity sparingly, especially during the peak period from 6.30 pm to 10.30 pm.

Meanwhile he said they had been trying to re-instate a private power plant at Kelanitissa which had not been operational for some time, however a technical fault was not allowing this to take place. He said the AES Kelanitissa power plant has a capacity of 163 MW.

On Thursday (27) Daily Mirror reported that a 110 MW gas turbine plant at the Kelanitissa Power Station had also tripped due to the dry weather situation in the area. (Thilanka Kanakarathna)

The government is okay. But the good for nothing engineers of CEB should take the initiative to go solar.

    Arnold Saturday, 29 July 2017 04:58 PM

Solar panels are cheap the government could install solar panels on all roofs and generate vast amount of electricity.

Sad story of Sri Lanka...politicians fight for power whilst country is neglected and going backwards..With climate change impact hydro power is going to be infeasible. We might come to a stage of no electricity at all...economy will crash whilst politicians fight rob and cheat the country. No hope for Sri Lanka

SCARY SCENARIO Saturday, 29 July 2017 05:08 PM

Based on the above figures there is 2250 MW of installed thermal plant and 1750 MW of Hydro (major minor)l There is a short fall of 150 MW to meet the Maximum Demand (Power wise) using thermals assuming all are functional. -- On the same assumption (all) the thermals can only produce 27 GWhrs during the day.(12 hr period) - a short fall of 17 GWHrs, - which if need be met by Hydro, will require 1410 MW of plant (of which minor hydro should contribute 60 MW.) This - to me - is a very scary scenario of insufficient amount of installed thermal capacity. ( and knowing very well the unreliability of the large 300 MW machines at Norachcholai)

As long as we can remember was there a single day in our past when we heard from CEB that it is geared to supply the demand for electricity without any issue? We have been badly defeated!

When bunch of crooks with the hidden interest run the PUCSL, these things will happen. This is just a start. We can see the full outcome on 2018. These crooks prevented all the low cost power plants which scheduled to be started on 2016-2017 and trying hard to replace those with Diesel and LNG plants. They just want to please these Diesel and LNG mafia and get their kickbacks. Yes. Renewal energy is good and we have a very good potential for that. But before that, as a country we should think about match increasing demand in shorter period. In the name of clean energy, we can’t put the people on dark. The people sought for highly variant Solar and Wind power should also think about the cost per unit and backup capacity required for back those plants in case of variance. In other words: Need of the hour is food for hunger. In such scenario, demanding only Biriyani/Pizza for food is madness.

70 years post Independence and we are still waiting for rain to ensure we can have 100% power generation. Yet another pathetic situation, thanks to our bickering leaders who have 0 foresight and only know how to waste public money.

All are Horas,There are millions of sq/mts of roof tops available in the state establishments alone. Why is the CEB not interested in setting up solar power plants.Just take a look at the land avaialble in Ekala area belonging to Radio and wireless company, Take over and set up a large solar power plant.

GTs tripping due to dry weather is bit too much to swallow .! After all most of the machines in the Middle East are GTs.
