Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam’s logic to wear long sleeved clothes to protect school children from dengue was hilarious and worthless, Education Trade Unions claimed yesterday.

Speaking on the matter All Ceylon Teachers’ Union (ACTU) Secretary Joseph Stalin said Minister Kariyawasam had made no concrete suggestion to protect schoolchildren nor had he taken any action regarding it.

He alleged the spike in dengue fever among students was due to the inefficiency of the education authorities.

Mr. Stalin also said the authorities should pay more attention to fogging at schools and also implement other solutions to ensure children’s safety.

Meanwhile, Ceylon Teachers’ Services Union General Secretary Mahinda Jayasinghe said the Provincial Education ministries had not taken sufficient measures to eradicate dengue in school premises which had resulted in hundreds of students contracting the fever.

He said the country was in the middle of an epidemic but the Provincial Educational Ministries had not taken any preventive measures. He added that the authorities should immediately start a dengue prevention programme with the support of the health sector to make schools a dengue free zone.

Children’s right to education and the students themselves should be protected at any cost, Jayasinghe said. (Thilanka Kanakarathna)

The minister's logic is I suppose is to protect the school kids from the sting of the mosquito and not to eradicate the dengue menace. Education TUs should also take the blame for turning a blind eye on mosquito breeding places in school premises!

If prophylactics are a sure defence against STDs, why not long sleeves? To some measure it works.

When you use the word epidemic, tourist industry will be the first casualty.

What the Minister said was perfect. The students to wear denim and long sleeve is a good solution. also providing Mosquito repellent to each class to apply during the time these mosquito can stink. TU only know to shout. use your head.

So what is your point? Other than Condemning the minister? Any better solution? Other than blaming someone else other than yourselves?

True Patriot Saturday, 08 July 2017 09:37 PM

Let's change the people so we in the govt. don't need to change. Get the school children to change their shirt sleeves which is easier than to eradicate the Dengue epidamy. What about our precious daughters? Do you want them to wear long sleeved uniforms and blue jeans to prevent mosquito bites? Thats the limit.

The Minister said something worthwhile, but these people? Nothing but criticism only!

Dengue can be and should have been eradicated if a logical and scientific approach has been made, but the President has passed the ball to inefficient officials and they have passed the ball on to public. It is foolish to go behind mosquitoes in Sri Lanka.Pls go behind infection. Its already late but not too late.

    ralahamy Monday, 10 July 2017 07:56 AM

People in some African countries use dirt upto quarter inch on their body to avoid mosquito stings. They can't afford protective clothing. By the way, these trade unions do not know anything about Shramadhana to clean school? Varsity students have the stamina to go marching on the road, but expect the authorities to clean the campus premises. They want everything done by the Govt. in power, without moving a muscle. It looks that we have become a parasite of the society.

    Ranjitdea Monday, 10 July 2017 11:03 AM

No Bite No Dengue, that is the slogan in some countries. Eradicating the mosquito is near impossible. Stalin does not know what fogging is - chasing the mosquito to another area.
