Megapolis and Western Development Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka said today the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) did not have a scientific methodology for garbage recycling.

He told parliament that the CMC had some 70 officials who were qualified enough to provide technical assistance on garbage recycling.

The minister said the Meethotamulla catastrophe had occurred because of several reasons including the continuous dumping of garbage in the area without any scientific methodology and the instability of the ecosystem by way of floods.

He said steps would be taken to stabilise the Meethotamulla garbage dump during the next six months so that there would be no reason to fear any further collapse.

He said there was a need to set up scientific waste management plants in the country such as the one in Dompe and requested all stakeholders to support these moves. (Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)

CMC officials have scientific methodology to collect commissions. Meethotamulla catastrophe happened because they abused power. For them, no garbage means, no money! It was planned to dump the garbage on a two-acre plot of land. Later the garbage dump extended to 20 acres without court permission. They also put 50 fire-engines bowzers of chemicals without scientific methodology and court permission.

CMC has brought its Colombo people to level zero with the re-cycling project. They have to get abused by the CMC garbage collectors, and people have to beg, bent and bribe the collectors. Especially, the nearly 200,000 flats and apartment dwellers. When a household mix the garbage out of the 30 to 50 houses, Garbage will not be collected for 2 weeks. Its the CMC who have design a separate process for these flats / apartments. Instead those CMC engineers use the same process as the individual houses and make every ones life a miserable.

During the parliament debate MP ,Marikkar said that environment authority is prioritizing the life of birds and animals instead of human. Mr.Marikkas shall understand that we live because of the trees and surrounding environment .We the one who dump garbage and destroying the very environment which provide us oxygen ,food ,rain ,and breeze, to live in.Who we are to dump garbage in forest where birds, animals live for million years. So teach public and pass relevant law to reduce garbage dumping and protect the environment which we already destroyed irreversibly.

When govt. don't have any development projects in progress, to impress the people they think introducing laws to discipline people might earn a good name for the Govt. But, it further frustrates them. When Gota built parks and walking paths, he didn't harass people, the walkers were disciplined in a very polite way. Not like how the CMC is trying to discipline people rude and barbaric.

It is said that Sweden has an efficient garbage recycling system, and are importing garbage. Why not explore this avenue, but probably there will be no kickbacks available for the pockets.
