Ministry calls for explanations for use of inferior quality coffins

2017-04-19 21:03:06

The Disaster Management Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa had called for explanations from the District Secretary and the Divisional Secretary over the incident where inferior quality coffins were used for the burial of the Meethotamulla victims.

Media spokesman for the Minister said the ministry had allocated required funds for the burial of the victims.

He said the District Secretary and the Divisional Secretary had informed the ministry that they had faced difficulty in finding a proper place to purchase coffins due to the festival holidays and managed to find the best possible coffins available. (Ajith Siriwardana)

Mr minister, you wouldn't have had to worry of inferior quality coffins if you thought of giving a superior quality life for these people.

In any case, the use of good quality timber should be banned for making all kinds of coffins. This is common sense.

No minister can take action against commission / bribery / corruption as themselves have been involved in same acts.

Was this commission more than the commissions what MR and his JO rotters got from China on road projects?

The explanation is not at all acceptable since these were not the only funerals had during New Year time. There was one near my house but not complained about non availability of undertakers. Their defence is worse than the offence.

It is very strange to know that undertakers were closed for holidays. Specially around hospitals. Lame excuse ( or we should call it commission excuse)

Pardon me - why this false sense of status , prestige , and what ever you call it - after all it is " earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust," - why not take a page or two on the last funeral rites (customs)

I disagree. Its the familys choice. Minister of disaster management is just shifting focus on the blame. Hes in charge of preventing disasters not nitpick how people are buried afterwards. He failed so should resign. via DM Android App

In developed countries when this type of disaster occurs honest leaders are prepared to take the liability and responsibility as they are accountable for protecting their people. That is a tradition of them to resign from their post. However taking liability is foreign to our country as our leaders are selfish. In Canada all MP are graduates. It is a must. If people of our country follow Canada, educated MPs will launch a proper recycling projects to diminish these garbage hill. then no need of inferior coffins.
