NEC proposes School education be truncated at Gr. 12

The National Education Commission appointed to make policy proposals on education has proposed that the school education be truncated at Grade 12 and admit children to school at the age of 4+ as a move to minimise unruly behaviour among adult students.

Commission Chairman Prof. Lakshman Jayathilake said in Grade 13, children were adults of 18 years which was not good for maintaining discipline in school.

"We have made a suggestion that school should be truncated at Grade 12 and add a year as pre-school or kindergarten to admit children at the age of 4+. This must be the primary school or a separate entity run by the government. These are internationally accepted standards, he said.

He said children were admitted to school at the age of 4 years in other countries and added that early stage of education was most effective in inculcating educational behaviours.

"In other countries, children are admitted at the age of 4 years and educated by very qualified teachers who know child psychology. They have small classes in that age so that they are given a good start in life. Early stage of education is very effective in teaching children socialising and adopting to situations etc.," he said.

He said they submitted its proposals on General Education policy proposals including the above to the President and the Prime Minister recently.

Prof. Jayathilake said both President and the Prime Minister agreed to submit their set of proposals to the Cabinet as an action plan and to work collaboratively with relevant sections such as Education Ministry, National Institute of Education, Department of Publications and the Examinations Department.

He said the commission conducted a research on present requirements, issues in education system and future needs when drafting the proposals.

He said their proposals underpinned education psychology for the country, school facilities and infrastructure and arrangement. (Ajith Siriwardana)

We did our A/L when we were only18yrs. Our children are doing A/L when they are 19yrs. Definitly O/L should be held for year 10 students not for year 11 students.

Don't show parliament proceedings to children, Keep children away from news and other adult programs, scrap grade 5 scholarship program and parents should stop protesting with their children. Give them a good foundation before they go to school.

It is an absurd proposal to admit children at 4 They should be admitted at 5 or more. The solution is not terminating the schooling at year 12 because they are yet small children even at year 13.What should done is to teach good manners like obliging,thankfulness,politeness , not being selfish and respecting others .

Since kids go to Tuition Classes for AL. It is better to stop the school after O/L and pay them all money to go to Tuition Classes.Age 4 start is not a good Idea.

NEC should address the curse of tuition after school for Children. They have no time for play and social activity now after school day is over, other than going to tuition class.This is more important than all other issues effecting the children.

Hello, Professor,Stop messing about with the children's childhood.Do some thing positive and recommend all children to be taught in English from grade 8 onwards.So that when the children leave school they are ready for proper employment. Rather than becoming Tuk , Tuk drivers.SWRD and Sirimavo destroyed our education system by removing English as the main medium of teaching.This the biggest gift SWRD and Sirimavo gave to the Sinhala people in SL.However, all three of their children were educated in English!!

Prof is talking rubbish. Do not judge quality of education from age. Whats important is quality education and the methods adopted. Follow Finnish system of education. They are excellent. Unruly behavior comes from the parliamentarians themselves. Punish anyone severely so that they will not repeat that kind of behavior. Start this from the parliament first.

In most developed countries children go to school(primary) on their 5th birth day or later. There is no basis for Prof Jayathilake's claim that children are admitted to school at the age of 4 years in other countries. May be he is getting out of touch with the modern world.
