The Colombo Municipality’s Public Health Department yesterday raided supermarkets in the vicinity of Hyde Park and decided to take legal action against three leading supermarkets which were found to be storing food items under unhygienic conditions.

“Due to the festive season, supermarkets usually stock a large number of food items disregarding safety regulations. There was no outdated food items detected during the raid though most of it was stored under unhygienic conditions,” the Colombo Central Medical Officer of Health (MOH), Dr. Subash Mendis told the Daily Mirror.

He said many of the food items were tightly crammed into freezers though the usual procedure was to leave room for air circulation.

“Freezers were found overloaded with food items and unsuitable for human consumption. We will take legal action against the three supermarkets. We will carry out sudden checks today as well,” he said.

The surprise checks are being carried out during the festive season by the Medical Officers of Health and the Public Health Inspectors of the Health Department under the instructions of Colombo Municipality’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ruwan Wijayamuni with the objective of nabbing errant vendors and food items unsuitable for human consumption. it is A***** - C******* and K**** - Years ago I used the Wash Room and got permission - there were Vegetable Stores On the Ground near the Wash Room.I have watched on You Tube where a Rat was in the Meat Trays in One of the K Super Market. Yes the CEO or the Rep will speak to the Officers and The problem will be solved. Why the Officers did not Seal the Supermarket. If they do it,,, These Big So Called Supermarkets will think of the Customers. 30 Years ago while doing my MBA - a question was given. In Japan - Customer is GodIn UK Customer is KingIn Sri Lanka/South Asia Customer is Dog - Give answer with expiation.

Tripple laminate bags have very strong barrier properties and can withstand even toilet water and even most acids. So STOP WORRYING as long as the pack is not punctured.

The truth is that a lot of these supermarkets do not even follow basic rules when it comes to food safety standards. All freezers should be at -5 to avoid meat/milk getting spoiled Staff should not wear rings/nail polish when serving fresh food.

We think this Big supermarkets chains are regulated by their own inspectors who inspect while the customers are at their stores. All this show for the public and the foreign delegates who shop in this area. The Health inspectors should raid these shops very frequently as WE the customers pay between 30 to 40% or even more for the goods at these convenient stores ????? They import goods which are sometimes expire in 7 days BUT they use their own tags and extend the expiration date. WHO CHECKS ON THESE ????BUT they recognize themselves with CERTIFICATIONS received by SLS or even to ISO standards.WILL THE HEALTH INSPECTORS PUBLISH SUCH SUPERMARKETS TO INFORM THE PUBLIC !!!!! This is a direct violation of CONSUMER RIGHTS !

Well done ! Please publish a 'Safe Hotline' - Supermarkets are Not Safe as they appear to be. Innocent Public are duped.

People who talk big and condemn these super markets end up buying dirt from the pavement paying a much higher price thinking its fresh.

Dr Rizvan Jaldeen Thursday, 13 April 2017 07:21 PM

Why is the reporter or editor in Chief of Daily Mirror not reporting the names of the super market is his palms greased by the CEO's of the Super Markets to withhold the names I am not much worried if you dont publish this in this page as I have already posted in Social Media

NOT ONLY PERISHABLE GOODS BUT ALSO THEIR PHARMACIES TO BE CHECKED AS THEY CARRY EXPIRED DRUGS WHICH ARE SOLD OVER COUNTER AND WITH PRESCRIPTIONS. THESE SUPERMARKETS HAVE BECOME KILLERS ! ALL THE DRUGS WHICH HAVE BEEN RE MARKED WITH THE EXPIRATION DATES SHOULD BE CHECKED WITH THE MANUFACTURER OR THE DISTRIBUTOR BY INDICATING THE BATCH NUMBERS AND BAR CODES WHICH ARE PRINTED ON THE BOX. THEY MAKE MONEY BY MAKING THE CUSTOMERS SICK !!! WHERE IS THE CUSTOMER PROTECTION ACT !!!!!!

Bet you, nothing will happen, and they will sweep it under the carpet, once they get their giant hampers. This is all a show for the cameras and public consumption.

Arnold...your head is warped...get it checked. If what you say can be taken as a good comment, then very soon these supermrkets will be storing triple laminated foodstuff inside cess pits too. Just use your common sense my dear friend. You are a nut case.

    Wobbles Friday, 14 April 2017 02:18 PM

You are perfectly right. This country is so currupt that everything is thrown into the bin. This is all eye wash.

    Raza Monday, 17 April 2017 07:37 AM

If genuinely interested on consumers, the name of the Supermarkets should be published. Otherwise People like me will think it as Arpico, Foodcity, and Keels Which are in the vicinity of CMC. Please clear. Otherwise the news is no value to the consumer.

    Katie Monday, 17 April 2017 11:55 AM

I was at Arpico on the 13th and I was shocked to see a leg of pork green on the top and it was displayed for sale. So please check the piece of meat you buy from Aprico. Its always best to buy fresh
