Govt. paying Rs.140mn as rental for ministries

The government pays nearly Rs 140 million monthly as rent for the offices where ministries are located, Parliament was informed yesterday.

Chief Government Whip Gayantha Karunatilake who was responding to an oral question raised by JVP MP Nalinda Jayatissa said the government paid monthly rent to 33 buildings where ministries are located.

Accordingly Rs 24 million is being paid for the premises of the ministry of agriculture while Rs. 14 million is being paid for the premises where the ministry of childcare and women's affairs is located , Rs 11 million for the premises of special empowerment ministry and Rs. 11.3 million is being paid for the ministry of Road Development premises.

It was also revealed that some ministries including the ministry of foreign affairs, public administration, National Policies and Economic Affairs and ministry Foreign Employment have rented more than two office buildings to carry out their tasks. (Yohan Perera and Ajith Siriwadana)

    Paying Rs 140 Mn per month or Rs 1.68 Billion in a year is due to lack of planning by government and setting up numerous unwanted Ministries. Look at number of Ministries in developed countries or Singapore for that, See the waste if funds with the Agricultural Ministry for which PM is responsible who got Cabinet apptoval.

    Paying this kind of a Rent is ok as Long as They Perform their duties in accordance with the Law. It does not happen here mostly government taxes are being wasted.
