In response to the call made by a group of Buddhist monks to ban school big matches, Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam today said they cannot do so.

The Minister said the call was not new and there had been requests in the past as well to ban big matches.

“We can’t ban school big matches. It is not a practical move to tackle students’ undisciplined actions,” he told the Daily Mirror.

However, the minister said they have had a discussion with school Principals recently to take preventive measures to tackle possible violent incidents among students during the impending school sports season.

Minister Kariyawasam said they have given instructions to law enforcement authorities including the Police Chief to take action to minimize incidents which cause public nuisance during the big matches. (Lahiru Pothmulla)

A 'big match' cannot be the cause of student indiscipline. It's the upbringing of those kids.

Citizen Perera Wednesday, 22 February 2017 11:21 AM

Well disciplined parents have well disciplined children.

    Sunil Wednesday, 22 February 2017 11:20 AM

A very sensible statement from the hon. minister.

    Dr.Watson Tuesday, 21 February 2017 08:51 PM

Well said Mr. Minister. It is more practical to bring discipline to all citizens and also the monks. We have seen them try to block vehicles new courts, stoning and climbing walls and gates. This is a disgrace and need to be stopped before it is too late.

If Old Boys who have liquor in their "Tents" supply liquor to school boys they should be punished. In our day, these were fun days, what is this world coming to.

    bindu Wednesday, 22 February 2017 08:15 AM

Make arrangements to start big matches with the blessings of maha sanga (observe pansil and pirith) on the ground and also blessings of other religions. How about that ?

    joshua Wednesday, 22 February 2017 08:10 AM

Banning big matches would be a joke. But the Police should introduce strict fines for persons disturbing the general public. Booze should be banned from the grounds.

Sameen Jan Wednesday, 22 February 2017 07:06 AM

Ban the sale of liquor at the schools' 'Big' matches. That was the essence of the appeal

    Modi Wednesday, 22 February 2017 06:22 AM

Perhaps the monks should organise a few gangs of pathalayos (they may get advise from any pollie how this can be done) and beat the shit out of these unruly brats. That is the only way to stop this menace.

    Henry Wednesday, 22 February 2017 06:04 AM

All those blokes who are away from the Cricket grounds or in front of a TV / Radio watching them are not Cricket Lovers . They deserve a reasonable punishment and let's begin from there!

    Dee Wednesday, 22 February 2017 12:08 AM

Sad some schools don't play cricket.

    Summa Tuesday, 21 February 2017 11:40 PM

Well done Sir. It is NOT about big matches but about time we have some laws to control the unruly buddhist monks. They should be disciples of Lord Buddha before thinking of others' discipline.

Descipline is the main requirement here. via DM Android App

    aravinda Tuesday, 21 February 2017 09:10 PM

If the minister can't ban them, then do what is necessary to stop nuisance caused to general public by those who participate the so called "bag matches". Stop motor parades that violate traffic law. Remember that those who do not participate theses parades too have a right to live in peace.
