The Government should give some space to establish private universities such as SAITM in the country as all the school leavers couldn’t be enrolled into State Universities; Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said today addressing media at the Ministry.

Minister Kariyawasam said he was the only person to adjourn a debate in Parliament against SAITM.

“Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa was the person who brought SITAM to the country and we are adopting his baby. I rose against SITAM in Parliament to bring it up to a certain quality and standard,” he said.

“If private universities agreed to maintain quality as the Government stipulates there is no objection to providing lands for them,” he said.

Two Medical Universities would be established in Kuliyapitiya and Sabaragamuwa. Rs. 2 billion had already being funded by the government for the construction of the Sabaragamuwa medical university.

“According to international standards, there should be a certain number of doctors for certain size of population. Unfortunately we haven’t reached that level yet,” he said.

“Establishing private universities will help stop flowing foreign exchange to other countries,” he said. (Chaturanga Pradeep)

Private MC is better and less costly than Foreign MC for the parents of children who miss out due to Z score. Far less impact on country's foreign reserves too

If there is a quota for the State University Medical degree and quality students are left out due ti the quota as it happens all over the world ,then the answer would be to establish private colleges .Since this establishment is impacts other areas like land and infrastructure at its foundation level which may displace people .Since it involves a radical change in the areas concerned and Family incomes too . may be the State should offset the loss by proper legislation for a Common Exam and also a contract with the students to serve the country in areas where there is a dire need to improve our ratio of .68 Medical graduate to 1000 people on the average.Over to you Minister !

All private students should sit the same Medical college exams at the same time under additional MC supervision. This could be extended to intermediate exams as well, so the students will know which way they are heading. It is ok to take private tuition but students should take the same government exam.

The selection to all Universities should be purely on merit. This will eliminate all unwanted elements entering the Universities & creating problems due to inferiority complex. via DM Android App

Doctor to patient ratio in india satisfactory due to freely available mbbs degree . But the quality of doctors are extremely poor health indicators indicates that Its the otherway around in srilanka we have excellent health indicators touching the levels of developed countries. So therefore the main idea should be to produce doctors with high quality rather than giving mbbs bypassing slmc which is the main quality controler of doctors in srilanka

As far as I know there is no law or an act, government has not established independent monitoring institute for private universities. Moreover, no standard or quality parameters for degree offered by private institutions. Most part-time lecturers are working there without Ph.Ds. But, they teach for postgraduate degrees.

Are you saying US,UK ,EU and the entire world has low wuality docs?

    Mahila Wednesday, 08 February 2017 07:09 PM

There should be common qualifying examination for all medical students at the end of first year of study either private or government on merit only to continue studies. This is to ensure parity of qualification and suitability to be a MBBS doctor 4 years thereafter, with stringent clinical training and be able to perform satisfactorily as professional Doctor. Whether they entered with district quota, Z score or entirely on merit would be immaterial. Equal playing field.

There is a surfeit of Lawyers but dispensing justice is very slow. What we need are more courts and independent judges.

SLMC are former GMOA doctors and dance to GMOA tune only - not independent.

Please propose to start more Private Law colleges to offer degree programme equvalent to degrees offered by law college and state universities of Sri Lanka to give more chances to all the school leavers and other professionals.
