The road accidents for the last two weeks have reduced by ten percent according to the Police Traffic Division.

ASP W.D.A. Dhanjaya of the traffic division said the declining rate of road accidents was a clear indication that the proposed legislation to prevent road accidents had gained its objects.

He said the rate of road accidents reported a day to the police stations in the country earlier was between 100 and 125 with more than 40 of them being serious accidents. However, the number of accidents reported for the last two weeks was between 90 and 100 a day.

ASP Dhannajaya said the death rate in accidents earlier was between seven and eight a day but it reduced to about five for the last one and half months and that it was a direct outcome of the proposed legislation to prevent road accidents.

Meanwhile, a senior official of the Motor Traffic Department said the number of applicants for driving licences had increased and that it was a clear indication that many individuals driving motor vehicles had not possessed driving lincenses.

Minister of Finance Ravi Krunanayake said the public had shown a positive response to the proposed legislation to prevent road accidents and to save their life. He stressed that he was not prepared to sacrifice the safely of a large majority to meet the demands of a handful of individuals.

We should not allow even one death. Punitive action must be taken. If we keel-over just because of these selfish and marauding private bus drivers, we may as well give-up all religion We have an obligation to be responsible for all life.Increase the number of CTB buses and provide an improved service. Stop the issue of route permits. I dont know of any other country where we have so many private buses owned by such a large number of private owners.

Create a proper Road Code standard that compares well to international accepted standards. Make EVERYONE sit it again to see how many would pass...

We must curb the private bus mafia and 3-wheeler mafia. Buses are given space to stop by making a dent in the pavement, but they never stop in the stipulated area. Always, private buses stop half on the road to prevent other buses overtaking. This has made more road accidents. In road rules, there is a ban to stop vehicles within 100 meters from a junction. But, in all the byroads, 3-wheelers stop on top of the road. This prevents and blocks vehicles entering those roads and cause accidents. They are a low unto them; is it because they went for meals in Araliya dana shalawa those days?Increased fines are a deterrent to accidents as shown by the paper articles. Good work, Yaha Palanaya!

Police statistics are not the real numbers. Usually its not reported to them and they encourage settlement between the two parties to avoid recording statements. The insurance companies numbers should be cross referenced for the actual tally. via DM Android App
