All Municipal Councils in the country have decided to refrain from collecting garbage from November 1 unless they were segregated, the Provincial Council and Local Government Ministry said today.

The ministry said the decision would affect all residences, shops, schools, hospitals and state institutions.

The decision was taken during a discussion held with all Municipal Commissioners and other officials last morning with the participation of Local Government and Provincial Councils Minister Faiszer Musthapha and Ministry Secretary Kamal Padmasiri.

“Disposed waste should be segregated under three categories as biodegradable waste, non-biodegradable waste and plastic or glass. Some of the Municipal Councils are already collecting segregated garbage,” the ministry stated.

During the discussions, the Municipal Commissioners pointed out that Municipal Councils had to face various difficulties with waste management due to irregular waste disposal.

Minister Musthapha said that steps would be taken to strengthen the Environmental Police to strictly implement the law against individuals who dispose waste on roadsides. (Darshana Sanjeewa)

We are served by those in the MC who cannot even differentiate between the garbage themselves as they themselves are GARBAGE!

First the municipality should place bins in all of colombo, so that public can dispose off empty bottles or cans, Why not take a tour from Pettah to Fort and see for yourself how many bins are there ? It is a pity we have so many preacher's with super knowledge but ,no happenings all what is said' is confined only to reading material

Very good decision. but do a campaign to educate, facilitate the process. otherwise it will be like what happened to the plastic boxes for vegetables.

    Arnold Thursday, 29 September 2016 05:30 PM

THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE YEARS BACK. If it was done earlier we wouldn't have to live with these garbage mountains.

    nuke Thursday, 29 September 2016 06:59 PM

the municipal council should provide respective bins for everyone with a charge, if not where do we place this segregated garbage? in your face?

    Shelly Thursday, 29 September 2016 06:56 PM

Come on Mr Municipal Commiissioneer, say it in simple terms not diodegradable waste , Non diodegradable waste, OK GLASS AND PLASTICS, AFTER ALL EVEN TRAFFIC POLICEMEN , CALL THE TRAFFIC WHEN IT IS GREEN AND WHEN IT IS RED TO STOP , HOW STUPIDTHEY THINK THE PUBLIC IS, so make it simple and clear

If Sri Lanka can adopt a method like most of the developed countries have it would be very easy to control the garbage menace. For example where I live they have provided each house hold with 3 bins. Green/Black/Blue.Green is for household waste (biodegradable)Black is for garbage. (Non-biodegradable)Blue is for recyclable. (Paper and bottles)There are 3 different sizes for these bins. (Small/Medium/Large). You can select the size to suit your requirement. These are being taxed according to the sizes of the bins in a category called solid waste management in your Utility bill. (Water bill). The collection of these waste Green bin every week, the other two will be on alternate weeks. Each category will be collected by separate collection trucks.I don't know how feasible is to implement this in SL.

YEP, BIO DEGRADABLE CAN BE SOLD AS FERTILIZERS, PLASTICS AND GLASS CAN BE SOLD AS RECYCLING MATERIAL, AND THEY MUST NAME THE STUFF COMES UNDER NON BIODEGRADABLE.

    OMG Thursday, 29 September 2016 06:26 PM

Haha, first they should train the garbage collectors, then should train and provide garbage standardized bins to all at concession price with different colors. All medias should educate the public with advantage of this process to the country and environment,

    Subasinghe Thursday, 29 September 2016 05:49 PM

    Just follow without nagging

    Unchikun Thursday, 29 September 2016 05:47 PM

In Nugegoda we where so informed and started to segregate the garbage nearly 6 months ago. We do as instructed. Them come the garbage truck and dumps them into it all mixed and off they go.

Sanjeeva Wijeratne Thursday, 29 September 2016 05:44 PM

Living in the Borlesgamuwa area these past 5 years and paying my municipal taxes, I am yet to have ONE garbage collection..Suggestions please as to how i dispose of same? Good idea to 'segregate' the rubbish, just make sure all households, shops, schools, government institutions etc., etc. are provided with clearly labelled containers, as per your picture, to ensure the practicality of the scheme. Before trying to implement or PROSECUTE in this matter, think it through and give the people the TOOLS, they will willingly do the job.

    Citizen Thursday, 29 September 2016 05:40 PM

It would be better If the councils advice citizens how to keep this 3 different types and collection procedures i.e Do they collect all 3 types at once or different days....What are the colours for different types?
