The Chairman of State Bank of India (SBI) Arundhati Bhattacharya— incidentally, the first woman Chairman of the bank’s 208-year history— and two Deputy Managing Directors will be arriving in Sri Lanka today at the invitation of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL), which celebrates its 66th anniversary this year.

Bhattacharya is expected to deliver the CBSL’s 66th anniversary oration under the topic ‘Financial Sector Reforms in India.’ Reserve Bank of India Governor Dr. Raghuram Rajan, who will step down from the top post in September, delivered the 65th anniversary oration of CBSL.

Bhattacharya and the two Deputy Managing Directors (DMDs)—Siddhartha Sengupta (International Banking Group) and M.S. Sastry, who is also the bank’s Chief Risk Officer, will also address a couple of seminars under the themes ‘state bank reforms and governance’ and the challenges relating to ‘compliance with international regulations BASEL III and

IFRS 9’.The seminars, which are organized by the Ministry of Public Enterprise and Development, will be attended by bank CEOs, DGMs and board members.

Meanwhile, the Chairman and DMDs will be visiting the SBI’s Colombo branch at Sir Baron Jayatilleke Mawatha on the September 1. The bank has been in operation in Sri Lanka since 1864.
On September 2, the SBI’s Colombo branch will host a luncheon customer meeting at The Kingsbury hotel and later a gathering with the members of the Sri Lanka Banks Association at Taj Samudra.
The Colombo branch also has organized a CSR project at the ‘Prithipura Infants Home’ at Beach Road Wattala to mark the visit of the top officials from India.  Under Bhattacharya’s leadership, USA’s Global Finance Magazine has adjudged SBI as the ‘Best Bank in India’, ‘Best Trade Finance Provider in India’ and ‘Best Sub-Custodian’.

Forbes Asia has included Bhattacharya in the elite club of 50 most powerful business women in Asia and also the top Indian most powerful woman in their list of top 100 world’s most powerful business women. She has also been featured in the Fortune list of top 50 globally most powerful women in business and in the Asia-Pacific region she is ranked among the top 5.
Bhattacharya took over SBI’s Chairmanship in October, 2013.
