Flight delayed due to unavailability of a crew member

A SriLankan Airlines flight UL554 from Frankfurt to Colombo was delayed by 15 hours due to late arrival of a flight crew member, SriLankan Airlines sources said.

The airline said it expects the flight to depart at 0400 UTC today once Frankfurt airport reopens after the scheduled night time closure.

“Due to unavailability of a flight crew member, the aircraft was unable to leave Frankfurt as scheduled last afternoon. All passengers affected by the delay have been provided with meals and accommodation. They will also be compensated as per EU regulations,” a spokesman for the airline said.

Safety records does not give weight because we have minimum number of airlines. Also escaped during several critical mishaps.

Apart from the absence of the crew member one must also acknowledge the fact that it's an airport which is closed at night that is upto 12 hours out of 15 hours of delay.

Appropriate action should be taken against this staff for not reporting for duty. The repercussions and consequences of this delay, however, should be the responsibility of the airline's management. Why wasn't there back-up staff?

It is easy for us laymans to pretend to be "industry experts". Aviation is a complex topic. I'm sure they did what was best and more importantly safe in that situation. After all SriLankan has a 100% safety record!

This is a vary shameful incident for both airline and SL, I am not sure how exactly the rule is, in my opinion if there is a minimum crew then definitely a plan carries more than minimum crew, so taking off without one member is not a issue expect he is a key member. we should demand stringent action against this fella, and which will be a lesson for others.

Learn airline regulations.You cannot start international flight without minimum stipulated crew. How can you get crew at short notice to leave one behind.Manager has nothing to do in this case.

Don't we have a stand-by crew of one or two crew members in case of emergencies? What if someone falls sick at the last minute? We are operating an international airline like a "kade business". Shameful and very unprofessional.
