The Education Ministry would soon introduce lessons on prevention of bribery and corruption into the syllabus in schools, Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said.

Minister said this while delivering a speech at an awareness programme held at the Taj Samudra, Colombo on the series of programmes organised among students and school community regarding prevention of bribery and corruption.

“The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, headed by Ms. Dilrukshi Dias Wickremesinghe, has started working closely with the Education Ministry by adopting education models to ensure the plan materialised,” he said.

The series of programmes is organized under Sathpiyawara awareness programme spearheaded by the Commission parallel to the International Anti-Corruption Day which falls on December 09.

During the programme, principals, teaching advisers and teachers were educated regarding the preparing of books to be issued for students on prevention of bribery and corruption.

Coming October month was named as the ‘Month of Preventing Bribery and Corruption’ by Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam.

During October, a number of workshops and events including debates and poster competitions would be held at all government schools in collaboration with the Commission and Education Ministry. (Piyumi Fonseka)

Hope this syllabus, "prevention of corruption" looks at the psychology level, and not just at the enforcement level which repeatedly proves to fail.Corrupt mentality in Sri Lanka starts at as early as a parent sending a gift to a school teacher with some hidden expectation of special care for the kid. Corruption and bribery are not just things for politicians alone; we see it on a daily basis, the corruption everywhere. Be it a low waged peon in the office, or a traffic cop, a bank's manager or even a school principal..all are into it.Nipping it in the bud, needs to understand why it is being the popular practice among masses to get things done fast? Or what circumstances that encourage otherwise supposed to be honest professionals or individuals get so venal? If we have to avoid standing in a long line, bribing the peon is not the only solution. This could also be avoided by not having longer lines.
