CB Governor after Ravi returns

President Maithripala Sirisena is expected to appoint the Central Bank's new governor next week in the wake of his discussion with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and after Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake returns to Sri Lanka, a government communique said today.

“The Finance Minister's approval is required when appointing the Central Bank Governor,” it said

Finance Minister Karunanayake, who is on an official visit to China, is due to return on Sunday, July 3.

Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran's tenure ended on Thursday June 30.

Several names including those of Advisor to the Prime Minister, Charitha Ratwatte, Senior Deputy Governor Nandalal Weerasinghe, Central Bank's former Deputy Governor W.A. Wijewardene and Dinesh Weerakody are being mentioned as possible replacements for Mr.Mahendran.

Meanwhile, the government denied reports that financial markets had declined as a result of the Central Bank controversy. (Yohan Perera)

President announced that CB governor would be appointed on the evening on 29th June. Now he wants to delay the appointment until Ravi Karunanayaka returns. CB does not come under the preview of Ravi. Then Why is the delay? Political jokers.
